Wyatt
I sat in the doctor's office, my leg was still in the cast. I couldn't help but feel a mix of anticipation and worry. For weeks, I had been hobbling around on crutches, my mobility severely limited. But today, the doctor was finally going to hopefully remove the cast and evaluate my progress.
The minutes seemed to tick by agonizingly slow as the doctor examined my leg. Prodding and testing the range of motion. I winced slightly, the muscles still stiff and sore from the injury. But the doctor's expression remained neutral, giving me no clue as to his assessment.
"Well, Wyatt, I have to say—this has healed better than I expected," the doctor finally announced, much to my relief. "The bone is mending nicely. However, you're still going to need to take it easy for a while and avoid putting too much weight on that leg."
I nodded, already making mental notes.
As the doctor finished up, my phone suddenly vibrated in my pocket. Glancing down, I saw Daniel's name flashing on the screen. I'll have to call him back.
I said goodbye to the doctor, and I stepped out into the hallway to call Daniel back.
"Wyatt, hey man, I've got some news. And you're not going to believe it," Daniel's voice came through the line. He sounded both excited and nervous.
"What is it?" I asked, my brow furrowing. Daniel's cryptic words had me on edge.
"I don't think we should discuss it over the phone," he replied. "But I think you'll want to hear this right away. Can you meet me at your apartment? It's important."
My mind raced with possibilities. "Uh, yeah, sure. I've just finished up with the doctor. I'll be home soon."
"Great. I'll see you there," Daniel said before he hung up.
I turned and headed for the exit. As I made my way to my apartment, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. Whatever news Daniel had, it was clearly important.
When I arrived at my place, I saw Daniel's truck parked out front. Taking a deep breath, I hobbled up the steps and found Daniel by my front door.
"Alright, Daniel, what's going on?" I asked as I opened the door.
Daniel took a seat on the couch, his expression serious. "Wyatt, I...I don't even know how to say this, but..." He paused, running a hand through his hair. "The DNA test results are in."
My heart immediately began to race. His words hit me like a ton of bricks. "The paternity test?" I asked, my mouth suddenly dry. "What did it say?"
Daniel took a deep breath. "You're not the father, Wyatt. And neither am I."
The words hung in the air, and I felt as if the world had shifted. For years, I've had this weight on me. And now, with a simple DNA test, that burden had been lifted.
"Wow," I breathed, struggling to process the information. "I...I don't even know what to say."
Daniel reached out. "I know, man. I know this has been hell for us, for you especially. But at least that part is over now."
I felt a weight lift from my shoulders. It was liberating to finally know the truth.
"What happens now?" I asked.
"Well, I think it's time we paid our old pal, Mayor Summer, a visit."
I nodded. "All right... But let me call Amber first."
I pressed Amber's number. My finger hovered over the call button for a moment before finally tapping it. The phone rang a few times before she picked up. She was already sobbing.
