"Kenji?" You exclaim, your voice a mix of disbelief and shock as you come face to face with your brother after so long.
Kenji steps forward, his expression unreadable. The faint glow of a cigarette hanging from his mouth illuminates his face, casting shadows that make it hard to decipher his emotions.
For a moment, you both stand there in silence, the tension thick enough to cut with a knife. The past years flash before your eyes, the sense of abandonment and betrayal you felt.
Kenji's presence stirs a whirlwind of conflicting emotions within you.
He takes a drag from his cigarette, the tip glowing brighter before he exhales a plume of smoke into the cool evening air.
He looks slightly older, hair longer than you last seen him, and there's a hardness in his eyes that wasn't there before. But beneath that tough exterior, you catch a glimmer of something softer-regret, perhaps, or remorse.
He finally speaks, his voice a low murmur. "Yeah, I know I'm probably the last person you wanna see right now..."
You swallow hard, trying to keep your emotions in check.
"Why now, Kenji?" you ask, your voice tinged with hurt. "Why did you never visit me in juvie? Why did you leave me alone to fend for myself?"
Kenji looks away, taking another slow drag of his cigarette as if searching for the right words.
"I know I let you down," he admits, his tone heavy with guilt.
"I was a coward. I didn't know how to deal with everything that was happening. But that's no excuse for abandoning you, and I'm sorry for that."
The words hang in the air between you, heavy and raw. You want to believe him, but the scars of the past run deep.
"Ugh, I don't have time for this shit!" you scoff, turning abruptly and beginning to exit the cemetery, brushing right past your brother.
"Simply hear me out, [Name]..." Kenji calls after you, his tone calm and steady.
You halt, turning to face him with a glare that could cut through steel.
"I want to make things right, for real this time," he says, his eyes locking onto yours with a determined yet cool gaze.
"It's too late, Kenji," you retort, bitterness lacing your words. "Those bridges were burnt a long time ago."
Kenji takes a slow drag from his cigarette, exhaling the smoke leisurely.
