1865- New Orleans

After running into Rebekah that night, the pair had hung out often, going for meals and drinks, going shopping. After Emma and Dex, Rebekah was her closest friend. Although there were many secrets the two had not shared with each other just yet, they were close. She had however confided in Rebekah about James. The two had gone on many dates since and she had grown to like him. Not love him of course, she didn't think she could love anyone ever again, but she thought she could be happy with him. One of Victoria's biggest dreams was to have a family, a happy one, with laughter and joy and everything she never got to have. James could give that to her.

However something in the back of her mind kept bringing her thoughts to Klaus. Hanging out with Rebekah, meant of course she would run into Klaus from time to time. Each encounter with him would be filled with flirtatious banter on both parts, and she couldn't help but feel giddy inside when it came to him. Of course that didn't mean she felt anything for him, maybe just a crush. But she knew he was the wrong person for her so she wouldn't even let her mind go there.

Not only that, Rebekah was now one of her best friends, so her brother was completely off limits. She had remembered how Katherine, who was her friend first, had gone after her brothers and ruined their friendship - she didn't want to risk that with Rebekah. Granted, Katherine did also destroy her life.

She sat in her carriage contemplating all these thoughts, when she finally arrived at her destination. The Mikaelson compound. Rebekah had invited her over for dinner tonight, they would have a sleepover after and spend the next day shopping. She was strangely excited, growing up with her vicious father meant she was deprived of a normal childhood, didn't have much experience with just being a teenage girl. Her and Rebekah were alike that way.

Victoria knocked on the door and was pleasantly surprised when a handsome man she had never seen before answered.

His face seemed to be stuck in a perpetual state of mischievousness as he smirked. "Hello Darling. You must be Rebekah's friend." He took her hand and gently kissed it. "I'm Kol, her most handsome brother. Don't you agree?"

She laughed, slightly incredulously at her forward he was. She had no choice but to play her part. "I'm Victoria, and well how could I not when it is so blatantly obvious?" Her smirk came out this time.

"Hmm, I like you. Are you sure you don't want to ditch Rebekah, come hang out with me for a day. I'm sure it'll be much more exciting than whatever she has planned. I can definitely think of a few things we could do." He scanned her body up and down hungrily as he said this. Her dress was absolutely stunning so, well she couldn't blame him.  A royal dark blue dress, her corset cinched at tight as possible and ruffles for days. She dressed to impress always.

"Unfortunately, I was raised to stick to my commitments, maybe next time." She suggested as she patted him arm, walking past and letting herself inside, getting tired of the cold outside.

He chuckled suggestively at that, before going to get Rebekah for her.

She stood inside the middle of the compound setting her bag down when she heard someone approach. "Victoria, I thought I heard your voice. I didn't realise you would be here today, otherwise, I would have put on my best suit. " As he smirked she realised just how much in common he had with Kol. Shameless flirts, the both of them.

"Well you must have impressively good hearing then, Mr Mikaelson. And don't worry, you look handsome no matter what clothes you wear." Flirting with Kol was different compared to with Klaus. With Klaus it felt dangerous and exciting, there was truth behind it. She had begun calling him Mr Mikaelson during these little back and forth remarks, at first it was mainly because of tradition from Mystic Falls, all the formalities. But now it was like a term of endearment, his smirk only got wider when she said it.

"I actually look much better without any clothes-" he was interrupted by Victoria's loud laugh which in turn made him laugh. This was the main thing she enjoyed about her encounters with Klaus, how he would catch her off guard.

Klaus enjoyed it too. He had grown a liking to keeping her on her toes, teasing her and making her laugh. Her laugh was slowly becoming his favourite sound. He wanted to bottle it up and listen to it every night. Him being the reason for that infectious laughter only brought a wider smile to his face.

"Nik, I do hope you're being appropriate. Please don't scare off my friend." Rebekah had finally arrived and Victoria felt slightly guilty that she had been entertaining him.

"Nonsense, I'm only informing her of current facts." He smiled slyly towards her

"Come, Vic, dinners ready." Bekah linked arms with her and they walked into another room to the round dinner table where Elijah and Kol were already seated next to each other. Bekah took the seat next to Kol, Klaus next to Elijah and Victoria in between them both.

"Victoria, glad you could join us." Elijah smiled. He was probably the most respectable out of them all, he had the most manners.

"Glad to be invited." She smiled back. The servers came and played their good and Victoria almost moaned at the smell. It looked heavenly. As they began to say, the four siblings engaged in conversation, Vic piping up here and there, but mostly just admiring them all. So happy together, laughing, and joking with each other. She wished she could do that just one more time.

She joined in their laughter at a joke Rebekah made towards Kol and commented. "You all seem very close with each other."

"Well we have been through a lot together." Rebekah said.

"And despite the squabbles I assure you we do have, we are family at the end of the day, always and forever." Klaus said with a meaningful look pointed towards his siblings that they all shared.

"What about you Victoria, do you have any siblings?" Elijah asked as he took a sip of his deep red wine.

It was a harmless question, and even she didn't want to bring the mood down with the truth, she had no choice but to say it, Rebekah already knew and the others were bound to know sooner or later. "Yes, I have, well, had, 2 brothers. Unfortunately, they're no longer with us anymore. They died a few months ago. Just before I came here actually." She kept a slight smile as she said it, trying to act as though she was over it when in fact it was breaking her in two.

"I'm deeply sorry for your loss. Losing a sibling is never easy." He smiled sadly at her.

"Thank you." And she was extremely grateful for Rebekah and Kol in that moment as they turned the conversation to something a little more lighthearted - how annoying Kol was. But she could feel Klaus' eyes on her, ignoring the other threes conversation.

"You know, we lost our own youngest brother, a while back. At first the pain was unbearable. I didn't think I could survive. But over time, that heavy feeling on your chest," his hand hovered over hers as he spoke very intimately, as if it was only the two of them there. "it gets easier to bear. That pain never truly fades, but it does get better with time." Klaus spoke with a melancholy tone, his eyes glossy, reflecting her own. They stared into each other eyes as she took in his words. She was grateful for his advice, truly, because she didn't think she could handle it if it hurt this much everyday for the rest of her life. She turned back to the rest of the table and took a sip of her wine but almost spilt it with how much her hand was shaking. She quickly put it back to her side to hide it, but klaus saw. He laid his hand on hers under the table, still not facing each other, squeezed it once, and let it rest for a second, hesitating on whether to pull it away, but she squeezed it back, grateful for his touch which seemed to calm her and set her on fire all at once. They sat like that, hands interlinked under the table for the rest of dinner and something inside her cracked.
