Bound By Friendship
She stormed through the hallways, her footsteps echoing off the walls. Her mind was a whirlwind of anger and frustration after the class president meeting. Pushing past a few students who gave her curious glances, Y/n didn't slow down until she reached the door marked "Workshop." She didn't bother knocking, instead throwing the door open with more force than necessary. "Mei!" she called out, her voice edged with fury.
Mei, who had been hunched over her latest invention, looked up in surprise. Her wide grin faltered as she took in Y/n's expression. "Y/n! Just in time! I've got something new to show you!"
Y/n shook her head, too upset to muster a smile. "Not now, Mei. I need to talk."
Mei pushed her goggles up onto her forehead, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. "Whoa, what happened? Sit down, spill it."
Y/n sank into a nearby chair, her hands still trembling with anger. "It's Iida. We had our first class president meeting today, and it was a disaster. He's so obsessed with rules and procedures. He doesn't get it at all."
Mei raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Sounds intense. What happened?"
Y/n took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. "He kept insisting that following the rules was the only way to ensure order and safety. But I know that listening to the students and understanding their needs is just as important. He just wouldn't listen."
Mei listened, nodding along as Y/n described the clash. "So, you two are already butting heads, huh? Iida's a stickler for rules, but you're all about the students?"
"Exactly," Y/n replied, her frustration still bubbling beneath the surface. "It's like we're speaking different languages. I thought we could work together, but now... I'm not so sure."
Mei grinned, her usual enthusiasm returning. "Well, sounds like you've got your work cut out for you. But hey, maybe you can find a way to meet in the middle. And if not, you'll just have to show him why your way works better."
Y/n managed a small smile, grateful for Mei's support. "Thanks, Mei. I needed that."
"Anytime. Now, how about a distraction? I've got something here that might cheer you up." Mei motioned to her latest invention, and for a moment, Y/n's anger began to fade, replaced by confusion as she stared at Mei's new invention.
"What is it?" she asked, her head tilting in confusion.
Mei beamed with excitement. "It's a hovering reading light! It uses micro thrusters to stay afloat, and the tracking system makes sure it always follows you around. Want to give it a spin?"
Y/n couldn't help but smile at Mei's enthusiasm. "Sure, why not? Maybe a little floating light will 'brighten' my mood."
"Funny," Mei replied with a slight chuckle before activating the light and lightly tossing it in Y/n's direction. The hovering light activated mid-air, emitting a warm glow as it hovered steadily around Y/n's head. She watched it for a moment, curious as it smoothly adjusted its position to maintain a consistent distance from her.
The gentle hum of the micro thrusters was barely audible, adding tranquility to the room. "I have to admit, this is cool," she said, reaching out to touch the light. It floated away slightly, maintaining its programmed distance.
Mei's eyes lit up. "I knew you'd like it! And don't worry, it's got a long battery life. Perfect for late-night study sessions."
Y/n chuckled. "Thanks, Mei. I think this will help."
Mei grinned. "That's what friends are for, right? Speaking of which, how about we do something fun tonight? How about a little get-together at my place? My parents aren't home, so we have the place to ourselves!"
Her face brightened at the suggestion. "That sounds great! I could use a change of scenery."
After gathering their essentials, they headed to Mei's house. The atmosphere was cozy, filled with the faint scent of metal from Mei's experiments and her invention prototypes. "So, what's on the agenda for tonight?" Y/n asked as they settled in, the hovering light still following her around the room.
Mei pulled out board games and art supplies from her closet. "I thought we could start with a board game marathon and then maybe get creative with some DIY projects. Oh, and snacks! I've got snacks galore."
Y/n grinned, feeling excitement building. "Sounds like a plan. Let's dive in!"
As they delved into their board game marathon, laughter and friendly competition filled the room. Mei proved to be surprisingly competitive, her maneuvers keeping Y/n on her toes. Between rounds, they shared stories and reminisced about the sleepovers they used to have, just like this one.
After a game of charades that left them both in stitches, they moved on to DIY projects. Mei guided her through a creative art project, encouraging her to unleash her imagination and experiment with techniques. As they worked side by side, Mei's passion for inventions and creativity shone through.
"Thanks for inviting me tonight, Mei," Y/n said sincerely, putting the finishing touches on her artwork. "This was what I needed."
Mei beamed, her eyes sparkling with happiness. "Anytime, Y/n. I'm glad you came. It's nice to take a break from your hero training and just enjoy each other's company, isn't it? I'm just glad you stopped talking about Iida, to be fair," she said with a smirk.
"I was not talking about him! I was ranting, just clean up the games!" Y/n huffed. As they cleaned up and prepared for bed, she realized that tonight's gathering had lightened her mood. As she drifted off to sleep, the soft glow of Mei's hovering light cast a comforting glow over the room, a reminder that no matter what, they always had each other.
