As the day rose, the sun shone brightly, casting long shadows across the school courtyard. Despite the cheerful weather, a tense atmosphere lingered around Jennie as she walked through the gates. Her breakup with Kai was still fresh, and she could feel the eyes of her peers on her, sensing the whispers and speculation.
As Jennie approached her locker, she saw Kai standing there, looking desperate and disheveled. Her heart sank, but she steeled herself, determined not to let him get to her.
"Jennie, please, can we talk?" Kai pleaded, stepping in front of her.
Jennie avoided his gaze, focusing on the combination lock. "There's nothing to talk about, Kai. It's over."
Kai reached out, his voice trembling. "Jennie, I made a mistake. I was an idiot. Please, give me another chance."
Jennie shook her head, finally looking him in the eye. "I can't do that, Kai. You hurt me too much. You showed me who you really are, and I can't unsee that."
Before Kai could respond, Lisa walked up, noticing the tension. "Hey, Jennie! What's going on?" she asked, looking between them with a frown.
Kai turned to Lisa, desperation in his eyes. "Lisa, can you help me? Tell Jennie she should give me another chance."
Lisa glanced at Jennie, confused. She could see the pain in her friend's eyes but didn't understand the full story yet. "Jennie, what happened? Why are you being so cold to him?"
Jennie took a deep breath, feeling a surge of frustration. "Well Lisa, Kai over here thought it was fun to just play around throughout our whole relationship. He was fucking other girls behind my back!."
Kai's face crumpled. "Jennie, that's not true! I love you. I just... I messed up."
Jennie's resolve hardened. "You didn't love me, Kai. If you did, you wouldn't have cheated on me with multiple women!"
Lisa's eyes widened as understanding dawned. "Kai, you really cheated?"
Kai opened his mouth to respond, but Lisa cut him off. "You know what, Kai? I don't need to hear it. Jennie is my friend, and if she says you hurt her, that's all I need to know."
Kai's face fell as Lisa stepped closer to Jennie, placing a protective arm around her shoulders. "Jennie deserves someone who treats her right, not someone who's going to play games with her heart."
"And why do you say that?" Kai spat out, "what are you in love with her or something?" He stared down the girl with anger in his eyes.
"Jennie is my friend and I will not have her running back to you or date anyone like you." Lisa said.
Jennie stood there watching as the two people she cared about stare down each other, her hand reached out to grab Lisa's arm.
Kai looked defeated, his shoulders slumping. "I'm sorry, Jennie. Truly, I am."
Jennie took a deep breath, her voice steady. " Kai, as much as I liked you, it's over between us."
With that, Jennie turned and walked away, pulling Lisa by her side. They found a quiet spot outside where they could talk without interruptions.
"Jennie, I had no idea," Lisa said softly, her eyes filled with sympathy. "Why didn't you tell me sooner?"
Jennie shrugged, wiping away a tear. "I guess I was embarrassed. I knew how much you didn't like us together."
Lisa hugged her tightly. "Hey, even if I didn't like you two together. You were still happy, I'm sorry if I made you feel this way."
Jennie leaned into Lisa, feeling the warmth of her friend's support. "Thanks Lisa. But I'm really glad it's over now. Maybe I should spend time to myself."
"You could try that." Lisa agreed, before pulling back and looking Jennie in the eye. "If he tries to bother you again, you just let me know. I've got your back."
Jennie smiled, feeling a sense of peace she hadn't felt since the breakup. "Thanks, Lisa. You're the best."
"I know, I'll finally be able to show Kai my wrath" Lisa smirks lifting up her arms, showing off her imagery muscles.
"What wrath? Your twig arms?" Jennie jokes.
"Hey! I've been working out!"
"Where?"
"Yah!"
As they walked back toward the school, Jennie felt lighter, the weight of the past few days beginning to lift. With friends like Lisa, she knew she could face whatever came her way, and she was ready to start moving forward, one step at a time.
