...there was still one more person jason had to cross off the list?

spring break '86

~

Max had been nodding off on the couch, Golden Girls re-runs playing softly on the TV, when she heard several car doors slam shut, accompanied by angry voices. She switched off the remote while massaging a kink in her neck from the weird position she must've slipped into. Peering out the window, she thought she may've still been dreaming.

"What the hell?" She muttered. None other than Jason Carver and his jock goons were outside her house? And damn they looked pissed. Shouldn't he be at home grieving or something? Ugh, she would never be able to forget what she saw that morning in the Munson's trailer for as long as she lives. Woah wait-

Guns. They had guns. And they definitely just saw her through the window.

Max stumbled back towards her room, bumping into empty beer cans that clattered to the floor. Her mind raced yet she couldn't think. Drawing a blank, her eyes found the dusty walkie that still sat on her nightstand. Her fingers hovered over it for a few seconds. Am I really about to do this?

Pounding at the door left her with no choice. Jeez, those jerks really had some guts, huh?

"Hey! Um, I know we - erm - I have been like completely AWOL for a while but uh... ugh I can't believe I'm really saying this..." Max blabbed on, completely uncomfortable with admitting to her obvious avoidance of the party for months on end.

The unmistakable sound of glass shattering cut her hesitation short however, a shriek escaping her lips.

"OK folks this is a CODE RED. If-if anyone's there I really need some help right about now! I swear I wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't serious!"

Knowing her time was running out, Max slammed down the antenna and circled around-

"Mayfield. Just who I've been looking for."

Jason had gone completely off the rails. He'd stormed out earlier with a couple others from the team in tow, hysterically claiming he'd "get his revenge" or whatever. Could he blame the guy though? The thought of something so awful happening to Ma-

Ugh. He sat forward with his head in his hands. Almost forgot about his brain-splitting headache (screw beer), and apparently, that he no longer had a girlfriend.

Speak of the devil.

A certain girl's muffled voice sounded somewhere amongst the heaps of blankets and snack wrappers... Was he hearing right? Or maybe he was still loopy from last night's drink fest... Lucas finally found his duffel bag though and pulled out the walkie talkie he'd hidden inside - always incase of emergency.

As Max, yes it really was her, explained in an unusually high voice something about her being sorry for dissapearing (wow, is she really apologizing right now?) but obviously needing to tell them something, Lucas slowly rose to his feet, headache forgotten. He couldn't believe his ears at the sound of glass breaking and Max (his MadMax) actually screaming. He didn't need to hear the rest before making his own dramatic exit from Benny's and thanking God that the trailer park wasn't far.

For once in her life, Max Mayfield was at a loss for words. She guffawed up at Jason, who stood blocking the doorway with bloodshot eyes and an uncomfortably satisfied look on his stupid face.
