To tell the truth , eventually Potter, who was now a Peverell, got into a new routine. Hogwarts lessons were like usual albeit less restrictive. He had gotten used to having Tom as a roommate and so now his protection spells were way better. He was casting protective spells in his sleep due to how terrified he was of Tom.

His duelling had improved a lot after he decided to do some self study in that weird room he found. Nobody in his year could beat him in defence against dark arts (DADA) except for Riddle and the gap was close to being bridged.

Riddle didn't seem to mind him that much. Tom had amassed a large following amongst the Slytherins and other pure bloods. Harry wondered why he had not kicked him out of the dorm. Maybe he was still interested in the invisibility cloak.

At this point of time , Tom was far ahead Harry in terms of skill.

For despite being just as bright , Harry's early education was frequently disrupted by bizarre events.  So Harry spent all of his free time in the library or in the secret room he had found. He was learning DADA skills slightly above third-year level. He even learnt about the unforgiveable curses and occlumency, though he did not try to perform either for he felt too underprepared.

In the meanwhile, when not doing much else, he tried to learn ancient languages. As a result he realised that he could speak parseltongue. Great, totally great, he was finally stepping out of survival mode. Crash the realistic situation (if that didn't break your immersion, this will) , he was basically the Slitherin house outcast.
