Around the bonfire, having just escaped from Midsummer, the atmosphere crackled with tension. The flames flickered, casting eerie shadows on the stern faces of Kiara, Pope, and John B. Their argument blazed as fiercely as the fire.
"You were in Chapel Hill with Sarah Cameron?" Kiara exclaimed, her arms crossed tightly, fury sparking in her eyes. "She has nothing to do with us!"
John B sighed deeply, struggling to maintain his composure. "Kiara, you don't understand. Sarah can help us. She has access to information we don't."
However, another unspoken conversation unfolded around the fire. Sitting across from each other, Jade and JJ seemed to be in a world of their own. JJ's gaze, brimming with playful allure, persistently sought out Jade's. Every time their eyes met, the girl felt her heart beat a little faster, her cheeks taking on a slight rosy hue.
JJ smiled, a smile that spoke volumes. He finally knew the feelings he had for her were mutual, and he had only one desire: to kiss her.
He played with a twig, twirling it between his fingers while keeping his gaze fixed on Jade. The Kook, attempting to mask her nerves, responded with shy smiles, her cheeks growing even redder. She fidgeted with her dress, a futile effort to resist JJ's playful advances and conceal the impact he had on her.
Suddenly, the argument next to them escalated, abruptly interrupting their exchanged glances. "You let a Kook in on our secret? We can't trust her!" Kiara's voice edged toward a near-shout, her frustration boiling over.
"I-I, uh, I..." John B stuttered, scrambling to defend himself. He searched desperately for a plausible lie to justify Sarah's inclusion in their treasure hunt. He knew he couldn't admit his feelings for her, not now.
Seeing that Jade's attention was now riveted on the argument, JJ decided to chime in. "Yeah, um... He was mackin' on her," he added with a mischievous grin, eager to tease his best friend. John B refused to admit it, but JJ knew that his friend was head over heels for Sarah Cameron.
Kiara's eyes blazed with fury, prompting John B to quickly concoct another lie in his defense. "I wasn't mackin' on her, I was just using her!" he exclaimed, throwing his hands up in a desperate gesture of innocence.
His lie blindsided Jade, the shock of discovering her best friend had been used hitting her. She struggled to mask her discomfort, knowing she had hidden her own friendship with Sarah and Alex to get closer to them. But this was too much. She couldn't hold back; she had to defend Sarah.
