Getting onto the ferry was a piece of cake, and it was on time for once

Getting onto the ferry was a piece of cake, and it was on time for once. We all lounged in and around the truck as we waited to get to the mainland, time passing so slowly that I considered taking a nap.

"My parents are so paranoid of me being a Pogue like it's the worst thing that could ever happen," Kie complained, shoulders low.

"Hey, I heard they got good weed at boarding school, though," JJ shrugged from his perch on the top of the truck, where he was rolling a joint.

"Designer shit," I nodded from my spot below him.

"I'm not going to boarding school," She scoffed, turning to look at the water. "They're going to have to kidnap me, tie me up, and throw me in a van."

"Well, I say," JJ started, passing me the joint and his zippo to pass to Kie before lowering himself to sit beside me. "We just crumble some herb right now."

"Hey, Kie, have you tried to hit John B back on that number yet?" Pope asked, looking up from the mysterious letter in his hand.

"Like, twenty million times."

"That's quite a few times," JJ jokes, putting his hat on his head and putting his arm around my shoulders. I snorted and moved further into his side.

"Some random lady at a hotel keeps answering."

"Well, until we hear from him again, we gotta try and clear his name," Pope looked back down in the paper in his hand and lifted it while Kie took another hit of the joint. "Right now, this letter's our best bet."

"Right. Stay on task," JJ nodded, his face turning a bit more serious. "That's why I love ya, Pope."

"J," I scolded and looked up while Kie stood on the truck bed, holding the joint out to Pope.

"What Pope are you gonna be today?"

He glanced at the roll, and shook his head slightly. "I'm good. I'm gonna try to focus."

Kie plopped down on my other side, holding the joint toward me.

"I'll take that," I did a grabbing motion with one of my hands and turned toward Kie with a goofy smile.

"Do tricks!" JJ joked, jostling my side. "Roll over, boy!"

The three of us laughed while Pope walked and leaned against the side of the truck.

"I'm not a dog, JJ."

"But you'd do anything for a joint."

"So would you!"
