I took a long drag off of my cart as I watched JJ throw some sticks into the fire, bitter that he had taken of the suit in favor of his t-shirt and shorts from earlier. Kie and I had remained in our dresses, the need to preserve their cleanliness diminished.

"Hey guys, so, like, my dad's already gonna kill me. What's this mandatory meeting about?" Pope asked aloud.

I looked at JJ from across the fire, shooting finger guns in his direction, asking for silent approval to get the ball rolling.

"Might as well tell him, C, before we're gaffed."

"Y'all ready for this?" I began, taking a deep breath. I glanced at Kie, and she glanced back shortly after.

"Yeah."

"So, the gold never went down with the merchant."

"Oh my god, here we go again with this." Pope began to complain, which only almost made rage boil in the back of my chest. "This is what I'm getting my ass beat for?"

"Shut—"

"No. All right, wait. Hear her out, all right?" JJ got him to stop, which I was silently thankful for.

"It's been here the whole time." I looked around at my friends wistfully. "It's on the island."

"Are you serious?" The girl beside me's eyes widened. "Oh my god."

"I'd like to voice my skepticism."

"I'm sure you would, bubba." I rose from my seat, moving to face the three of them at once. "But can I please present you with my evidence, sir?"

"Proceed."

"All right. So! In my backpack," I reached in my bag and pulled out the letter that I had received yesterday, holding it up. "I have a letter from Denmark Tanny."

"Who the hell's that?"

"Denmark Tanny was a slave that survived the royal merchant wreck. Check this out." I handed her one of the photocopies of the documents, her eyes scanning over it. "Okay, slaves weren't mentioned as crew members on the ship, but Big John and my dad, they found the complete manifest. That was their big discovery. So, Tanny used the gold from the merchant to buy his freedom."
