The story starts with Clopin telling the local children the story of the deformed bell ringer, his twin sister, the gypsy man, and the evil judge. He began to sing, "The Bells of Notre Dame."
🎵"Dark was the night when our tale was begun on the docks near Notre Dame."
"Shut them up, will you?!" the babies' father harshly whispered to his wife.
"We'll be spotted!" another man said in the same tone.
"Hush little ones!" the mother softly cooed to her twin babies. They immediately stopped and soon fell fast asleep.
🎵"Four frightened gypsies, slid silently under the docks near Notre Dame."
"Four guilders for safe passage into Paris," the boatman said as soon as they exited the boat.
🎵"But a trap had been laid for the gypsies, and they gazed up in fear and alarm at figure whose clutches were iron as much as the bells..."
"Judge Claude Frollo!" the twins' father gasped in horror.
🎵"...The bells of Notre Dame!"
🎵"Judge Claude Frollo longed to purge the world of vice and sin."
