I'm taking requests because writer's block is a thing. You and your team have to work a case on New Years Eve which annoys you since you wanted to hang out with some friends from college at your house; just have a chill night. Spencer notices your upset demeanor the whole time so he tries his best to cheer you up every now and then.
The team actually manages to wrap up the case two hours before midnight, so Morgan suggests that you all hang out at a local bar to celebrate New Year's together. Hotch brings Beth, the woman he's been seeing for a while, and JJ brings her boyfriend, Will.
Great. Couples that will be able to share a New Years kiss in front of you. You can't help but feel sad.
You sit at a small table that's behind everyone else and sip your drink every now and then as you just watch whatever is on the t.v above the bar. Spencer comes over and sits next to you with a five dollar bill in his hand and a pen.
"You know, the average American dollar has traces of cocaine in it," he says randomly, stabbing the bill with his pen. He twists the bill and the pen around as he speaks.
"When the bill goes back into circulation after being rolled up and used, some of the drug stays in the fibers of the bill."
After he's done talking he rips the pen out of the bill, leaving no visible rip at all. He puts the pen and bill down, leaving you a little surprised. You chuckle as a response and pick up the bill and pen to investigate.
He always uses magic to cheer someone up and that's something you find endearing about him.
"Well that was an interesting ice breaker," you chuckle again and set down the bill and pen, looking at him. Spencer smiles slightly once he hears you chuckle. He leans back in his chair and looks over at the bar. He lets out a breath, watching everyone's happy demeanor. Everyone is having a good time, except for you.
"Are you not having a good time?" he asks quietly, tilting his head to the side slightly to look at you. Your smile fades a tad and you look to the table, tapping the table very lightly with one finger as you think about how you're going to respond to him.
"I am, I'm just...tired," you reply. Spencer notices the change in your expression and watches the smile fade from your face. He can tell that there's something more going on in your mind as he sees you look down at the table.
"You sure?" he asks quietly. You sigh quietly and look over to the two couples from your team; Hotch and JJ.
"Being single sucks sometimes," you admit, slowly looking back at the table. Spencer notices the look of sadness on your face; he's never seen you look like this before and it makes him feel terrible.
"Being single does suck," he agrees quietly. You look up and raise your eyebrows, almost chuckling at his response.
"I didn't think you would be someone to care about relationships much."
A small smile starts to appear on your face. He can't help but smile and shrug his shoulders slightly.
"I didn't think much about them when I was younger, but lately I've been thinking about it more." he responds quietly. He looks over at the couples and then back at you.
"I'd like to have someone to love someday who loves me and for me."
You stare at him with empathy and a sense of longing before snapping out of it and resting your chin in the palm of your hand with your elbow on the table.
"You know, I haven't had a boyfriend long enough to have a New Years kiss."
You chuckle at your stupid confession and use the straw from your drink to move the ice cubes around, them making satisfying clinking sounds against each other and the glass.
"That's kinda why I'm like this right now. I'm jealous of Hotch and JJ..." you trail off with embarrassment. He stays silent for a few seconds as his mind pieces things together. Spencer softly chuckles and looks at you with a genuine expression on his face.
"Neither have I."
Your eyes soften then they snap up to look at him and his sweet smile. His confession doesn't exactly surprise you but something in you makes you feel even more attached to him. Your lips part slightly as you stare at him longer like you're in a freaking romance movie and you get butterflies for some reason. He just stares back at you with the same expression, probably wondering what the hell you're doing.
For a few moments, there's just silence. He can't help but just stare at you as your eyes fixate on him. He has no idea why you're looking at him like that, but he notices that there seems to be a longing in your eyes. He glances at your parted lips for just a split second before looking back at your eyes, wondering what you're thinking right now.
You cough awkwardly and look back to the table, stirring your drink again to fiddle with the ice cubes.
"Anyway..."
You have no idea what to say. Spencer can see that you're a little flustered by what just happened and he tries hiding the fact that he thinks it's adorable. He decides to break the awkward silence by telling you another fact to lighten the mood again.
"According to Daniel Compora, a professor of English Language and Literature, the New Years kiss is part of both English and German folklore, which indicates that whoever a person is with at midnight portends what type of luck they will have for the rest of the year," he finishes with his signature tight-lipped smile and nodding his head slightly.
You smile and blow out air through your nose like a chuckle with your mouth closed, nodding your head slowly and look in your drink, stirring it slowly.
"Is that so?"
"Yes. He also says that it was likely German immigrants who brought this aspect of their folklore to the United States. Though it's unclear exactly when it took place, a New York Times article from January 3rd, 1893, is thought to be the first documentation of the--"
You look up with a small, hard to read smile.
"Sorry," he chuckles and looks awkwardly between you and the table. "I was starting to ramble, wasn't I?"
"It's okay," you respond genuinely. While it can be annoying sometimes, you generally don't mind if he rambles about something, especially when he's doing it to cheer your up. He scoots a little closer since your expression is concerning him a little, with you avoiding eye contact and all. He glances at his watch then faces you.
"Hey, will you look at me for a second?" Spencer asks quietly and softly, gently tapping the tip of his finger under your chin. You slowly look up with a slow sigh through your nose to see his big brown eyes pretty close to your own. He can't help but feel his heartbeat begin to quicken a bit as his eyes fixate on yours. He can feel a lump forming in his throat so he slowly gulps.
Not too much longer now....
He slowly moves a strand of hair away from your face and behind your ear, leaning forward slightly so his face is even closer. Your lips part and your breath hitches quietly as you stare into his eyes, wondering what the heck he's doing so close to you and with his hand now gently cupping your cheek. The delusional part of your brain thinks he's about to kiss you, but really? Spencer Reid going in for a kiss? Yeah....no.
Suddenly, the whole bar erupts in unison saying "Happy New Year" all around you but everything seems to disappear quick; Spencer takes a breath then pulls your head closer, him leaning in at the same time, until your lips touch gently. Your eyes flutter shut right before the contact while his confidently shut, and your heartbeat speeds up in an instant. You two share a sweet kiss for seven seconds before he hesitantly leans back, gazing into your eyes as you look back into his. You're surprised and frozen for the first few seconds, but then a smile slowly grows across your lips together, eventually giggling as both of your smiles widen completely.
"So what does this say about my luck for the year?" you ask cheekily.
"That it's going to be great, obviously," he responds just as playfully.
Well damn. Spencer Reid can be spontaneous.
