I wake up in a bright white room. It's cleaner, brighter, and way quieter than anywhere in the Dauntless compound. I sit up and feel a slight tingling in my head. I stand up and feel a slight tingling in my leg. I look around and realize the room is more like a hall. One end leads to a bright light, one end leads to a deep darkness. I start to walk toward the light because it seems so much more inviting. With each step the tingling gets less and less.
"Wait," someone calls after me. I stop and turn around. It's Malachi.
"You can't go there, not yet. That's where I'm going, and you can't follow me."
"What are you talking about?"
"Listen, I can't talk about this now, but one day you will understand. Right now all you need to know is that I'm sorry, and I need you to trust me. Do not follow me."
I watch as he walks into the light. I watch until he disappears. I look back into the darkness, wondering where I should go. In the end I decide to continue into the light. I only get a few feet until I see another figure in front of me. It looks like... but that's impossible.
"Mom?" I croak out.
"Hello, Beatrice."
"Mom!" I run into her arms. She looks the same as she did the last time I saw her, only minus all the blood.
"Beatrice, you shouldn't go here. Listen to me. You can do whatever you think is best, but you should know that if you go here there is no going back."
She wipes a stray price of hair out of my face and smiles at me.
"Where does this go?" I ask.
"I can't tell you that sweetie,but you're a smart girl. You'll figure it out."
She turns and walks away, the same way Malachi went.
"Mom, come with me." I hold out my hand for her but she doesn't take it. She smiles at me and turns around so she is walking backwards.
"That's a place only you can go. I've already moved on, and like I told you: once you go this way you can't go back."
"Tobias..."
"He's the other way."
I nod and turn to go the other way.
"I love you."
"I love you too, Mom."
The further into the darkness I step the more and more my body aches. The tingling in my leg turns into an aching, stabbing pain. My head starts pounding. Just when I think I'm not going to make it everything goes black, and then I open my eyes.
