Before Lucy became a police officer, she was in the Army and decided once she was out of her contract she was going to be in the reserves. She was an E-5 when her contract was over. She has not told anyone besides Grey about being in the reserves.
One day they were in roll call and Grey started to do roll call. He assigned everyone their job when Lucy's phone started to ring.
"Chen. Answer your phone if it is important," Grey said.
"Chen. How can I help?"
"Good Morning Sergeant Chen. This is Sergeant Major Wallace. I am sorry if I am interrupting you at work but we need you to come lead a group of soldiers in Iraq. I am not too sure how long this will be. We would like to fly you out today at 16:00."
"Yes sir. I will be there. I just have to let my boss know and pack."
She walked back in the room and before she sat down she needed to tell Grey.
"Chen. What was so important?"
"Sir. I need time off. I am not sure how long it is going to be but I am being called to lead a group of soldiers in Iraq. They need me to fly out today at 16:00."
"No problem. Let me know when you know when you are coming back. And thank you for serving this country in several ways."
The rest of the group sat there stunned. They had no idea about her being in the Army. She left the station and went to pack her stuff. After being at her apartment for an hour, there was a knock on the door.
"Hey. What are you doing here," She asked.
"When were you going to tell us that you were in the Army?" Tim asked.
"I do not talk about it to anyone. I thought you would understand. I lost few of my friends right in front of me and I do not like to relive those days."
"I am sorry. I should have never came and asked you. I wish you the best and can not wait to see you when you get back."
A few hours after Tim left, Lucy went to the airport and got on her plan to the base where she was meeting her crew. She decided that she is going to video call Mid Willshire after she landed in Iraq.
"Hey everyone."
"Hi Lucy."
"I just landed here and wanted to tell you all that the trip was smooth and good. I will also call you guys in a few weeks after I get adjusted and I know exactly what I am doing."
A few weeks go by and Lucy finally calls her friends back home.
"Hi guys. I am exhausted. I have not slept in 26 hours but I wanted to let you guys know that I am doing okay and that I should be able to come back in like 4 months."
"That is good to hear. Why don't you get some rest so we know that you do not get hurt or killed."
After they hung up, Lucy went to bed and got some rest. She was not asleep that long when she got a call from a commander telling her that her group needs to go out. They went out and did what the commander needed. Lucy could not go to sleep so she went to the gym that was on base.
The next day the group called her.
"Hey Lucy. You doing okay?"
"Hey. I am getting through the day. Hold on my commander is calling."
"This is Chen."
"We need you here asap."
"On my way sir."
"I need to go. I will all back when I am free. Stay safe."
She went to the commander and was told that she could go back home and that they were very grateful for her service and help. She decided that she was not going to tell her friends because she wants to surprise them.
She got on the plane and was thinking about the time that she was going to land which was 14:00pm. She knew they were about to go to lunch so she was going to meet them there.
The others just got to the food trucks and ordered their food.
"I wonder how Lucy is doing. She did not call us back yesterday," Angela said.
"I am doing fantastic now since I am with my friends," Lucy said.
They all jumped up and gave her a hug. They were not expecting her to be there.
"I am sorry that I did not tell you guys about being in the reserves. It is just not something I talk about. I have watched several of my friends being killed in front of me and I just do not like talking about those times."
"It is okay. You do not have to share anything that you are not comfortable with."
Everyone continued with their shift and Lucy went back on patrol the following week so that she was well rested. She was never called back.
