Chapter Nine
But Things Were Going So Well :(
From: The Faery Vow by Melissa Saturn137
I opened my eyes as if waking from a dream and sat up in a big, fluffy bed. I appeared to be taking a nap in the middle of the day, fully dressed in a beautiful emerald green floor-length tunic. Now where am I?
Oh good gosh no, tell me I’m not back in Lori Mayer’s Renaissance Room! There was no way I could go through that kind of humiliation again!
Except, I looked more closely and noticed it was not the same room at all. Jumping from the bed I ran to the window. Below me was another courtyard surrounded by castle walls, but clearly different from Wendy’s story. Wendy’s story had a definite, real-world feel to it. This felt more like a land of magic. Like you wouldn’t be surprised to see fairies flitting about, or gnomes tending the garden, or unicorns grazing in sunny meadows.
The room itself was obviously another lady’s bedroom. Except really messy. Yikes, what kind of character was I? I looked in the mirror to find a pretty young woman, perhaps late teens, maybe twenty. She didn’t look like a slob, but it takes all sorts I guess.
Curious. I was with Wendy when I was sent here, but she has never posted a story set in this kind of world. She’s usually a feet-on-the-ground kind of author.
If I was to deal with whatever I was to deal with, I needed to figure out whose story this was. Walking to the door I turned the knob and – it didn’t move. Rattling the knob several times didn’t seem to loosen it in any way, either.
“Hey!” I called out, pounding on the door. “I’m locked in here!”
The door was opened almost immediately by a guard wearing a medieval helmet and chainmail armour, holding a pike. Okay, serious dude.
“Is there a problem?” he asked.
“Um, yeah,” I said through the small crack in the door he was allowing me. “I somehow got locked in.”
“And?”
“And, I’d like to get out,” I suggested.
Serious Dude nodded. “Makes sense.” He was not being helpful.
“So can you please open the door and let me out?” I said in frustration.
Serious Dude looked slightly confused. “You do realize you’re under arrest, right?”
“Oh!” I said, unable to keep the surprise out of my voice.
“That was the whole point of this past week,” he explained further. “You’ve been locked in this room for six days. Has it seriously never occurred to you to even try the doorknob up until now?”
“Oh, sure!” I bluffed. “I knew that. I was just testing you! Good job, tough looking, medieval dude!”
“Is there anything I can get you?” he asked.
“Gee, I dunno,” I said, thinking. “A cake with a file in it? Tunneling spoon?” I looked at the stone castle walls of my bedchamber. “Jackhammer?”
“Another test?” suggested Serious Dude.
“Straight A’s,” I replied with thumbs up and what felt like a stupid grin on my face.
“I’m closing the door again, Lady Laila.”
I leaned against the closed and locked door, looking once again at my palatial prison.
