Hot shot had recently started his cancer treatment. Hot shot was a bit nervous about what was going on still. But he was going to have to get used to it. Hot shot's family and friends of the family were sending cards and presents to Hot shot. Even Heatwave's and Quickshadow's coworkers were sending cards and presents.
"Why am I getting all these presents and cards?" Hot shot asked. "My birthday isn't for months. It isn't Christmas yet either," he said.
"Sometimes when a person is hurt badly or very sick people send presents and cards to them," Heatwave explained.
"That's right it is their way of showing they care about you and hope you get well," Quickshadow said.
"I am determined to get better," Hot shot said.
"It will be sometime before you are better son," Heatwave said.
"You will need treatment for several months or even over a year," Quickshadow said. "It is different for just about everyone," she said.
"Okay," Hot shot said. "I like the cards but I don't know how to read," he said.
"Don't worry son your mother and I can read them too you," Heatwave said. "This one is from granny and pawpaw," he said. "It is says get well soon, our dear grandson Hot shot, we are wishing you a lot of strength as you start your cancer treatment and we love you, from granny and pawpaw," he said.

"There is even one from your birth mother wishing you be strong through this whole ordeal," Quickshadow said.
Hot shot was happy to hear these things that people were saying. It made him feel so much better.
Hot shot looked at some of the presents he got. His grandmum and granny made his some hand knit beanie hats in many colors and patterns. He also got some picture books. He got some coloring books. He got some toys and stuffed animals too. He even got a new big box of crayons.
Hot shot was still going to his radiation treatments. He had been going back and forth from home to treatment for almost two weeks. Dr. Lopez was checking on him a regular basis to make sure he was doing okay. "Okay Hot shot you are looking like you are doing just fine," Dr. Lopez said. "I see you are feeling okay and you look like you are doing fine," he said.
"My head kind of itches," Hot shot said.
"Radiation treatment can cause itching," Dr. Lopez said. "It can also make the skin red, painful, peel and become sore," he said. "But that is all completely normal," he said. "You are going to be just fine," he said.
"Oh okay," Hot shot said. Hot shot was feeling better after hearing that itching was normal. Hot shot was soon getting another radiation treatment. Hot shot was listening to the music that was coming through the speakers. He was staying nice and still for it. Hot shot was doing a good job at it too. He was very proud of himself.
Hot shot got up when the treatment was over and the mask was removed. Hot shot was glad it was over too.
As time went by Hot shot was feeling the affects of the radiation treatment. He was feeling very tired, weak, and his tummy was hurting. He had to take medicine to help him feel better.
Dr. Lopez noticed after his treatment today Hot shot's blood counts were low and decided Hot shot needed a blood transfusion.
Hot shot was very nervous about that. Hot shot watched the video on blood transfusions. Hot shot learned that blood transfusions were very common and painless. There are different types of blood cells and they have different jobs. He learned his treatment kills of the red blood cells that give him energy. Blood transfusions give him that type of blood cell to help him feel better. A blood transfusion can take 1-4 hours and no recovery time is needed. He would also feel the affects very soon and have more energy and feel better. Hot shot felt a lot better after watching the video.
Hot shot was hooked up to blood in the transfusion center. They made sure the blood was the right type before hooking him up so he would be alright getting it. Hot shot was able to do things that he liked to do during transfusion. Hot shot was able to watch videos and play video games. Hot shot was happy to be able to have fun during this time.
Once it was over Hot shot got a red bead for his collection. Hot shot found it to be very cool. Hot shot was able to have lunch after it was done. Then they head headed home.
"I am very proud of you Hot shot you are being so brave," Quickshadow said. "I think you deserve something for being brave," she said. They went to a store and went to the toy section. "You may choose one thing," she said.
Hot shot looked at the stuffed animals and grabbed a plush anteater. Then Quickshadow paid for the stuffed animal. Hot shot was very happy with his new toy.
Hot shot was happy to be back home once they got there. Now Hot shot could rest for a bit. Hot shot sat on the couch and watched TV quietly. Hot shot was going to keep being brave through out his cancer treatment.
