quackity can't stand the sound of sapnap crying.

it sounds so mean, and of course sapnap's feelings are his priority, but the ravenette just won't stop and quackity doesn't know how to fix it.

sapnap cries after all of their stupid fake breakups, understandably, but this one seems to be hitting him especially hard. quackity assumes it's because of what karl said, claiming he's fallen out of love, and how it seemed so much more definitive than the ones before. still, quackity has never had a good understanding of romantic feelings so they always seem to go over his head.

"do you want to talk about it?" he offers, because sapnap ignored him when he asked the first time. this time, the ravenette shakes his head.

it also bothers him that sapnap is sitting against his pillows, leaving quackity to sit against the hard wall. it's a purely selfish thought, when sapnap is so obviously hurt, but, again, he doesn't understand romantic feelings. he can't fathom the hurt his friend must be going through.

"do you just want me to stay with you?" he asks, trying to be gentle. "or do you need some space?"

quackity does understand why it would hurt sapnap to be in his and karl's room right now, so he would be willing to leave the ravenette in his room if he needed space. even in a platonic argument, quackity understands that reminders of the person can make it hurt more.

"i just don't know what i'm doing wrong," sapnap splutters through his tears, suggesting that he actually does want to talk no matter how much he denies it.

quackity hates seeing his friend in pain. it kills him to sit here and watch sapnap cry, knowing that he can't actually do anything to help. he could force karl to apologise, but what good would that do? they would just end up in this same position a few months down the line.

"you're not doing anything wrong, sapnap," quackity tells him, because he knows that much is true. sapnap has been an amazing boyfriend to karl - he's put up with much more than quackity ever would. "he's being toxic, you haven't done anything."

sapnap shrugs, and quackity hates the way that karl can so easily make him seem so small and unsure of himself. "why would he break up with me if i didn't do anything?"

"because, sapnap, he clearly has some-"

the conversation is cut off abruptly, and both boys turn towards the door at the sound of a thump coming from somewhere in the apartment. they wait in silence, like they expect something else to follow, and then sapnap stupidly asks, "what was that?" as if quackity doesn't have just as little information as him.

"i don't know," he replies anyway, "i'll go check."

despite his words, sapnap still follows when quackity gets up to leave, trailing after him as he heads down the hallway.

every step he takes, a deeper sense of dread falls over the ravenette. quackity can't put a finger on how he is feeling, but there are nerves building up at top speed the longer that he nears the other rooms and hears nothing. "karl?" he calls.
