karl had never even heard of gray-price cars before being assigned the presentation, let alone know enough to appeal to the brand and make an argument that will actually inspire them to work alongside his godfather's company.

there are probably hundreds of people within the office who are more qualified for this job than karl is, but ryan has always had a habit of giving the brunette jobs that will require him to stay late to get finished. or jobs that will lead karl to have to ask more questions, just so that the brunette will have to go to his boss for help.

as of so far today, karl has done a pretty good job of avoiding ryan. he tries to stay away from the older man and it usually works during the morning and most of the afternoon, but it's pretty unlikely that he ever goes a full day without some sort of run-in with his boss.

karl's attention shifts away from his monitor when he hears his phone vibrate against the wood of his desk, shifting to glance over at the illuminated screen.

our lunch breaks have lined up!! do u wanna pop out the office for a bit and meet me for milkshakes??

karl's gaze flits up to the time at the top of his screen and something like surprise sinks into him. he hadn't even realised that his lunch break started and, if sapnap hadn't texted, he probably would've worked right through it. he's desperate to get this presentation done and perfected, but he can't deny that getting away from the office for a little while would be nice.

he grabs his phone and replies quickly, agreeing to the plans and prompting sapnap to pick a café near them. he saves his progress and signs out of his computer while he waits for a reply and, when the message comes through, karl is quick to get up out of his chair.

the office spaces around him are all empty, since everyone has already gone for their lunch, and he wonders once again how he didn't even notice everyone leaving.

he brushes off the thought, deciding it's inconsequential in the grand scheme of things, and quickly heads out of the main office room. even the hallway is quiet, save for the sound of conversations happening in some of the side rooms. karl is pretty sure there is a conference for new employees going on, so it likely has something to do with that.

one of the doors before karl swings open and the brunette already knows from the carlessness who is about to walk out, so ryan's following appearance is no shock to him. in fact, the only shocking factor is that he just came from the printer room and has a stack of papers in one hand, implying he's actually doing some work for once.

karl bows his head, pretending to look at something on his phone screen, and hopes stupidly that he'll be able to pass unnoticed.

though of course, he could never be so lucky, and karl finds himself flinching back suddenly when he tries to shuffle past and the older man's large hand meets his ass with a hard smack.

he quickly turns back, looking to see if there is anyone else in the long hall who could've seen what just happened, but they are entirely alone.

"where are you off to?" his godfather asks as if he didn't just practically spank karl. he speaks so casually, almost as if he can separate himself from the knowledge that he just blatantly assaulted one of his colleagues - his godson, no less.
