✾_________THE MORNING came sooner than she hoped it would. As soon as her eyes fluttered open, she knew there was no going back. She knew it was early, far too early to be awake on a Saturday morning. And yet, the persistent cawing of crows outside her window refused to let her sleep in. Groaning, she buried her head under the pillow, but nothing helped.
Already in a bad mood, she shuffled to the kitchen. She wasn't hungry, so she opted for a cup of soothing tea. She needed a hot drink and coffee was out of the question; she simply couldn't handle in any shape or form. No matter how much milk or sugar she added, it remained bitter.
As she groggily turned around after making the tea, she was startled to see her sister already in her spot on the couch buried in paperwork. The surprise caused her to spill the hot liquid, a sharp sting spreading across her skin.
Hearing her high-pitched yelp, Anri looked up and burst into soft laughter. "That's what you get for waking up so late," she teased between giggles.
"It's 7 on a weekend morning. What are you even talking about?" Kiomi retorted, squeezing the end of her now-stained green shirt over the sink in a futile attempt to dry it.
"I know, I know. I'm just messing with you."
"Please. Don't."
After she had changed her clothes, Kiomi decided to sit down at the table with Anri. "Need any help with that?"
"Oh, there really isn't much to do, really. I am just going over matches that will happen in the next week or so. There's one team I'm interested in seeing play tomorrow. If you want to come with me, you can," Anri responded as she looked at the list of players from both schools.
"This team has been a regular at the nationals. They're playing against that rich school you said has ugly uniforms," Anri continued, not bothering to name the schools since Kiomi likely wouldn't remember. "But I don't see the logic here. One school has been going to nationals for years, and the other one formed their club only recently. Not even a month ago, I think."
"All I got from that is that you agreed to my help," Kiomi smirked as she leaned over Anri's shoulder to examine the teams. They didn't look like much, neither of them.
"Which player are you interested in?" Kiomi asked, taking the paper from Anri to examine it better.
"This one," Anri pointed at a photo of a tan boy, wearing the signature orange jersey of his school, "his previous games looked promising but I need to see it in person. So, you going?"
"Of course I am," Kiomi replied, looking at the other team. "You say their team was formed less than a month ago. How did they manage to schedule a practice match with these guys? Is it even worth going? Orange guys are an experienced team from what you say. They'll just crush these rich boys."
"Unfortunately, that's the only match I can fit into my schedule. After all, we need at least 300 strikers, and that's if they all agree to come. Someone needs to scout them all," Anri replied, a hint of defeat in her tone. Kiomi knew Anri would rather see the famous team in their full glory, but she would take whatever she could.
