"Stand—no, Ava, I'm starting to feel like you're doing it wrong on purpose," Glenn sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose.I huffed lightly, pouting slightly. "Why would I do that? I asked you to teach me."
"Just... watch what I do." I watched his foot placement, my eyes following up to his shoulder position to see how to pose them as well. I mimicked his stance, glancing between him and the glass bottle that's a good distance from us.
"Okay, now pull the gun up like this," Glenn dragged out the last word, holding his gun up so it's level to his eye.
Following his lead, I closed my left eye and squinted the right as I aimed towards the bottle. I knew how to shoot, don't get me wrong. I had been on runs with some of the group over the past couple of months, so I was getting a better grasp on it. But I didn't fully understand why it always hurt so bad afterward until Glenn looked at me funny for the way I shot.
I shot the bottle; it shattered and fell from the fence post. After adjusting my shoulder and elbow, I shot the one that stood next to it.
Glenn clapped, "Great! How's it feel?"
I lowered my gun to my side. "Better, definitely hurts way less. My aim wasn't the problem, I think. I'm pretty sure it was just the way I did it."
"Definitely. You could shoot a turkey between the eyes from this distance, but the damage it does to your body is the issue."
"A— what? A turkey between the eyes?" I smirked, squinting at him in mockery of his weird phrase.
His cheeks dusted pink, and he looked away. "I heard Daryl use it. Just wanted to see if it would work," he said, looking embarrassed.
I laughed. "Things sound different coming from Daryl's raspy demeanor than from your dorky one, Glenn."
"Watch it. You're getting too comfortable with your insults, pal." He narrowed his eyes at me before walking back toward the prison. I followed loosely behind him.
It was silent for a bit as we walked, but I enjoyed it. It was nice to have some peace and quiet in nature, especially with how populated the prison was getting. It felt like there were new additions to our group every day.
We began to see the fences of the prison, and I noted the mass amount of walkers pressed against them. Karen and Roman were on fence duty this hour, along with a couple of the new people whose names I hadn't memorized yet.
Roman spotted us and began getting the others' attention to bring the walkers farther from the entrance. Glenn and I took that as our cue to start running toward the fence. Roman jogged over and swung the gate open for us as we rushed in. Before I could get through the gate, I was pulled backward and landed between the spikes of the defenses I built to guard the gates better.
"Fuck," I grunted, trying to pry the cold hands from my jacket.
"Ava!" I heard Karen shout, followed by a few curse words from Glenn and Roman.
"I got it!" I shouted as the two men rushed toward me. I pulled my knife out and plunged it behind my head, hoping I hit it in the head. I felt the crack of bone and a squish before the grip on my jacket was released, the body falling loosely against the spikes.
I jogged into the gate. "Close it—close it!" I shouted as walkers began to walk dangerously close to the gate.
Roman and Glenn tugged at the rope to the heavy metal door with everything they had, the gate slamming shut in the face of a few walkers. "Christ," I panted, hands on my knees as I breathed heavily.
