Chapter 26

Mia

I'm not sure if I heard that correctly but it sounded like he just said that the former Mayor, Mr. Markham, and Lena, his daughter, were his parents. That's wrong on so many levels. And it explains so much as to why the family is so messed up.

I'm not qualified to deal with this kind of screwy stuff. Why did I think it was a good idea to come after Todd alone? I should have gotten someone to come with me.

Too late now.

"The Bradford's didn't kill your family, Todd." Somewhere in the craziness of all this he has to know that.

"It's their fault that we lost everything! It's their fault Lindsey couldn't control herself anymore. As long as she got her way, she was fine. But Beckett had to reject her! All he had to do was sleep with her and she would have left him alone. That's all!" He explained, leaving me to wonder if that's how her father handled her and her sister.

"I don't think that would have worked. Lindsey wanted more than that, Todd. She wanted something that Beck couldn't give her," I tried to reason with him. I thought maybe he had a little bit of common sense in his head.

When I hired him he seemed reasonable. A logical person who understood right from wrong. I couldn't have been that bad of a judge of character.

"He only had to fuck her! That's what Dad said!" Todd yelled as he started to pace back and forth in front of me.

Okay, maybe not as logical as I thought.

"She needs more than that. She needs help, Todd. You know that," I tried again to get through to him.

"He should have just given her what she wanted! I lost everything because he wouldn't give her ten minutes!" He screamed at the top of his lungs, making me jump.

I'm not sure what I should do. Obviously there's some mental illness in the family that hasn't been addressed. Obviously there's physical and mental abuse involved. And Todd is now alone and has to deal with it on his own. Lashing out at the community isn't the way.

"Look, I'm going to help you. I'm going make sure you get the help you need, Todd. I know this is hard for you but we will deal with it." My original plan of attack changed from taking revenge on him to helping him. It is probably better for both of us that way.

"You're going to give up the Bradford's for me?" And just like that I realized my plan isn't so simple.

Where did me saying I would help him turn into giving up my life? Apparently he didn't hear me right. "I said, I would help you get the help you need..."

"You are going to turn from them," his grin widened and his eyes were bright and glazed.

This isn't going the way I thought it would. Moving back from Todd, I tried to keep some distance between us but he kept moving. Walking from one end of the room to the other and keeping me blocked from getting to the door.

"I knew you would come to your senses. Lindsey said you were just like them but I knew you were different." He muttered to himself as he paced. "She was wrong about you. I knew you would stand by me."

"What? No!"

He turned, a dark dangerous beast in his eyes just waiting to be released. Taking very measured strides towards me, he glared at me as he questioned my response. "What did you say?"

"Uh... no? I'm going to make sure you get the mental help you need to move on. But the Bradford's are my friends. They have done so much for me. They will help you too. I'm not... Oof!" Before I could finish my sentence, Todd backhanded me, knocking me into the display behind me and sending plants and glass everywhere.
