"I'm just tryin' to get by."
-Eels 'Royal Pain'
After school, I sit on the bleachers while practice goes on. Me and Kyle exchange a few glances. We need to finish our conversation.
When practice is over, I wait by the locker room for Kyle. Coach Quinn walks out right before Kyle, and we exchange greeting smiles. When I see my brother's face, my smile turns into a straight line. I grab him by the ear and drag him to the front doors of the building.
"Ouch!!" Kyle screams all the way until we get to his car. When we get in, I slap him softly across the face.
"Well? Where'd you get it?" I cross my arms over my chest.
Kyle sighs, "I got it," He clears his throat, "I got it from dad's old dresser after he died. He told me where it was when i was 14. Said if anything happened to him then I needed to keep it to protect you and..mom."
I straighten my face as he puts the car in drive. "I'm sorry Kyle."
"No I'm sorry, Kie. I should have told you." He smiles at me and places his hand on my shoulder. "Now, where does Mariana live?"
My heart drops. "Um.." I breathe, "I kind of slept on the porch last night." I look out the window, refusing to make eye contact with him.
"What? Kie, did I just hear you right?" He looks angrily at me. "Why didn't you call me? I could've picked you up."
"My phone was dead, the power is out, remember?" I sigh and look at him. Kyle takes out his phone and taps on the screen. "Kyle? What are you doing."
Kyle holds up a hand to get me to shut up, then holds his phone up to his ear. I hear the line ring three times before I hear him speak, "Kristin, turn it back on. The water bill, the electrical bill, ALL OF IT!!" I hear mumbling. "No." More mumbling. "I'm not doing that." Finally a bit louder mumbling coming from the phone. "Wait. Fine." Kyle looks over at me. "Fuck, fine."
"What did she say?" I ask him as he lowers the phone and stares into his lap. I look concerned at him as I watch his hands hold his lifeless phone.
"Dinner tonight. With Eric." He scoffs. Eric is her rich boyfriend. I guess Dad wasn't good enough for her. "Guess we are wearing this shit." He pulls on his clothes.
I place my head in my hands, "Oh dear lord.." I mumble to myself.
