A Brief Study

After Scrooge's birthday, life was relatively uneventful. It had been a week, and the first interesting thing that happened occurred while you were walking thoughtlessly down the halls.

You were shuffling through the papers in your hands, looking through your old notes to see if you could freshen your memory on the upcoming future. You were just making it to an old diary page labeled 'Golf' when you came across Beakley vacuuming.

"Hi, Mrs. B!" You called over the noise of the vacuum. "Have you seen the-"

The kids came screeching past, literally. The four ducks were screaming as they ran, arms outstretched, past you as an ominous blue figure wailed while it chased them. You shrieked, leaping out of the way and subsequently dropping all of your notes as the kids ran past Beakley and into the safety of another room.

You let out a groan of pain as you slid against the freshly cleaned floor. As you looked back up to check your surroundings, you saw Beakley flip a switch on the vacuum from 'Dirt' to 'Ghost' as if it was a common experience. As you stared, open-mouthed, at the ghost, Beakley sucked it up into the vacuum and went back to cleaning the floors.

"Beakley," you said, "I wish I was as cool as you."

You recollected your breath and gathered your books and papers. As you went to pick everything up, nearly a dozen little feathered hands swept the clutter up before you could lay your hands on them. The kids had emerged from their hiding place once Beakley had taken care of the problem and were now staring at you with big grins.

"Ah, kids," you said as you stood. "Thanks. What are you up to?"

"What are you up to?" Huey prodded as you collected all of your notes from them.

"Research," you stuck your tongue out as they kids looked down, crestfallen. "Looking for the next big adventure."

"Learning!" Webby squealed. "Oh! Oh! Let me help, Aunt (Y/n)!"

You laughed awkwardly, "Um- Well, I like to read alone-"

"Please?"

It had come from both Webby and Huey. Of course they wanted to learn, they always did. You saw a bit of yourself in them, especially Webby, who was just as eager, if not more, than you to hear about new mysteries.

"Ah, fine-"

They were off to your office before you could finish. A sigh parted your lips as you turned away from the eager kids to the more action-based pair of ducks.

"You two?" You asked Dewey and Louie. They shook their heads vehemently.

"No thanks!" Dewey said.

"No way," Louie said, "No treasure, no Louie."

You shrugged, "Suit yourselves."

In your opinion, the research was just as fun as the adventure. You loved piecing together bits of old lore, figuring out the great mysteries of the past before you went out to solve them for certain. Plus, you didn't want to have another Toth-Ra situation. Your ego was a bit bruised by the fact that you got the tomb wrong, especially when the correct answer was lingering in the back of your mind.

When you entered your workspace, Webby and Huey were going rampant. They were scurrying around the bookshelves and looking through your stuff, even going so far as to look through the drawers of your desk.

Your face flushed red.

"KIDS!"

It came out as a scold. A little part of you meant it, and you were livid that they had gone through your stuff without a second thought. A glare crossed your face before you saw the pair of them staring up at you. Their eyes were wide with shock as guilty frowns parted their beaks and a sour taste sprouted in your mouth.

"I-" Your muscles tensed. "Kids, do not go through my stuff. I can't stand it. You can stay and help just-" you sighed- "Be careful okay?"

"Yes ma'am!" Huey saluted, recovering quickly. Webby took more time.

"Yes, Aunt (Y/n)."

You walked around your desk, taking your seat as you rubbed Webby's feathered head. Her eyes remained transfixed on the ground in shame.

"I'm sorry, sweetie. I shouldn't have yelled. I love you, Webby."

She perked up once more. "It's okay, Aunt (Y/n). So... what's coming up? What do you know about-"

And the endless questions began. It fueled your ego.
