THE BAYOU
fourteen minutes before midnight

"HOW COULD YOU think this is the best solution for the pack?" Val scoffed, arms crossed as she glared at her idiotic brother. "Have you lost your mind?"

The raven-haired werewolf paced on the wooden floorboards, anxiety and annoyance driving the need for movement. Her nerves had been high the moment those Original vampires stepped a foot in their territory. They smelled of death and something sweet, the kind that enticed you to be willingly poisoned.

The siblings had retreated into solitude to discuss amongst themselves. None of the pack members had tried to intervene, all far too busy soaking up the last few moments of being in human form.

The walls were littered with cracks and holes, and the wallpaper was peeling in more places than it should be. It was messy, and downtrodden by time and nature. Yet, the shack was the one place that felt safe enough to store supplies. It was hardly a house, but after years of being a slave to the full moon, they hardly found it necessary to have oneㅡas long as their clothes were dry, it would have to do.

"There are three women in that family, two of which cannot procreate, and you might as well be dead if you marry Rosalie." Val argued, hands on her hips, "Do you really think they're not going to question us? Why you're okay with marrying a vampire? They will find outㅡ"

"So, we tell them before they do." Victor countered, sounding more resigned than she expected. The meeting with the Original family had been draining, and they only had a few more minutes before they would turn back into werewolves.

"Do you have a better idea?" Victor raised an eyebrow, squiting at her. He interrupted before she could say anything, "Before you say the stupid thing, you know I'd never leave the responsibility to youㅡI'm the alpha."

Val snorted, "Don't use that line on me. Just let me do it, Vic. I'm not a child anymore, let me do this for the pack. For her."

It would have made sense if she were the one to marry one of the Mikaelsons. She was the sister of the alpha (the younger one, as he liked to remind her), and would be under no obligations to produce an heir. For most of her life, Victor did what he could to protect her from the world as he had promised. Doing thisㅡallowing an arranged marriageㅡfelt like breaking that oath.

But seeing the conviction she had, the willingness to do it for the well-being of the pack, his eyes softened.

It was a proud moment for him, to see her be selfless for the benefit of the pack; but that didn't mean he would allow it.
