Chapter Twenty-Three

"Hello?"

The sound of Ember's voice woke me up. I stretched and felt my muscles in my abdomen flex as I let a low groan escape my lips. I had my arms underneath the pillow as my head was laying against the bed, and I felt my exposed torso against the sheets underneath me.

As I let a sigh out, I opened my eyes and saw Ember sitting on the edge of the bed. Her exposed back was what caught my attention, and I stared at her as she lifted up from the bed then pulled her jeans on. I continued to look at her as she had her phone against her ear, then she grabbed her shirt before walking around the bed and out of sight.

When I turned my head the other way, I saw Ember walk out of my door then closed it afterwards. I stared at it before stretching again then laid there as I let out a breath. I lifted up before rubbing my eyes then turned over before sitting up in the bed.

As I sat there and looked around the room, I got off the bed before walking to my dresser. I looked at myself in the mirror when I passed by then stared at myself before my eyes glanced down at my exposed body. I grabbed some clothes from my dresser, then walked out of the room before walking to the bathroom.

After I turned the shower on, I waited until it was hot then I pulled down my underwear and stepped inside. I stood under the water and sighed before washing my body then standing under the water to stare at the wall. I crossed my arms before gently rubbing my arms and looking down as I slowly shut my eyes.

The feeling of regret soon surfaced through as I thought about last night. I ran my hands through my hair before sighing as I rinsed my body off then turned the shower off and stepped out.

I wrapped the towel around my body before drying off, then getting dressed. I wrapped my hair in the towel before standing in front of the sink and brushing my teeth. I looked at myself in the mirror then finished brushing my teeth before rinsing my mouth out.

As I walked out of the bathroom, I turned and walked towards my room before tossing my underwear in my basket. I walked towards the stairs before walking downstairs, then slowly taking steps as I passed by the living room.

When I didn't see Ember, I figured she was in the kitchen, which I walked to afterwards. I walked in, then saw her sitting at the table with a cup in front of her. She picked the cup up then sipped from it before setting it back down, and that's when her eyes looked up and caught mine.

My eyes glanced away before I walked to the fridge. I grabbed the milk out then sat it on the counter as I opened the cabinet above my head to grab the chocolate syrup. I poured the syrup into a cup then poured milk over it. I placed everything back where it belongs before turning around and facing Ember.

"Your mom wants you to call her." Ember said. I nodded as I sipped from the cup that was in my hands. "Also, happy birthday."

"Thanks." I placed the cup down then walked out of the kitchen before walking upstairs. I wasn't sure where my phone was, because I couldn't remember where I had it last night.

When I walked into my room, I found my phone on the floor with my jeans. I grabbed it then saw that it wasn't dead, but the battery was low. I also saw a few messages from Danny and a missed call. I rolled my eyes before going to contacts and calling my mom.

After the second ring, she answers. "Happy birthday!" I smiled as I sat on the bed.

"Thank you."

"How does it feel to be twenty?"

"No difference." I sighed.

"I wish I could be there, sweetie."

"I know." I looked at the floor as my phone was pressed against my ear. "I understand that you can't."
