The morning sun filtered through the paper windows of a modest hanok (한옥; traditional Korean house), casting delicate patterns on the wooden floor. In a small room adjacent to the main quarters, Yeon-mi carefully folded a vibrant handbook, her nimble fingers moving with practiced precision. She was a young woman in her late teens, known for her quiet grace and diligent work ethic.

Yeon-mi had been in service to Lady Hwa-yeong for several years now, and in that time, she had become indispensable to her lady master. Her day began before the first light of dawn and ended well after the moon had risen high in the sky. Despite the demanding nature of her work, Yeon-mi approached each task with unwavering dedication and a serene composure that belied her humble origins.

She glanced up as she heard the soft rustling of silk, signaling Lady Hwa-yeong's approach. Lady Hwa-yeong, a woman of noble birth and striking beauty, was known for her refined taste and gentle demeanor. She entered the room, her elegant hanbok trailing behind her like a whisper.

"Good morning, Yeon-mi," Lady Hwa-yeong greeted her with a warm smile. "You're always so diligent. I don't know what I would do without you."

"Good morning, my lady," Yeon-mi replied, bowing respectfully. "It is my honor to serve you."

Lady Hwa-yeong took a seat by the window, her gaze drifting to the garden outside. "The garden looks beautiful this morning. Perhaps we should take a walk later."

"Yes, my lady. I will prepare everything," Yeon-mi responded, already planning the details in her mind.

Yeon-mi's day was filled with a myriad of tasks, each one requiring her full attention and care. She prepare Lady Hwa-yeong's meals, ensuring that each dish was crafted to perfection. She tended to the household chores, from cleaning to mending, always with a quiet efficiency. Despite the hard work, Yeon-mi found solace in her routine, her days anchored by the familiar rhythm of service.

After helping Lady Hwa-yeong dress for the day, Yeon-mi accompanied her to the main hall where the family gathered for breakfast. As they entered, the other servants bowed, and Lady Hwa-yeong took her place at the head of the table. Yeon-mi stood quietly to the side, ready to attend to any need that arose.

Throughout the morning, Yeon-mi moved seamlessly between tasks. She fetched books from the library, prepared tea for Lady Hwa-yeong's guests, and even assisted with the embroidery that Lady Hwa-yeong enjoyed in the afternoons. Her work was constant, yet she carried it out with a grace that made it seem almost effortless.

In the late afternoon, as the sun began to set, Yeon-mi accompanied Lady Hwa-yeong on a walk through the estate's gardens. The flowers were in full bloom, their colors vibrant against the green backdrop. Lady Hwa-yeong admired the blossoms, occasionally pausing to ask Yeon-mi's opinion on which flowers should be cut for the dining room arrangement.

"Yeon-mi, you have such an eye for beauty," Lady Hwa-yeong remarked as they walked. "You should consider pursuing art someday."

Yeon-mi smiled softly, though she knew such dreams were beyond her reach. "Thank you, my lady. Your words are too kind."

As they walked back toward the house, a procession passed by the garden's edge. It was a nobleman's entourage, complete with a ga-ma (가마; sedan chair) and attendants. Yeon-mi watched from a distance, her eyes lingering on the figure who seemed to command the group's attention with his effortless charm. It was Hyunjin, though she did not know his name or status. She only saw the young man whose gaze briefly met hers, leaving an impression she could not quite explain.

Returning to the household, Yeon-mi resumed her evening duties, focusing on preparing Lady Hwa-yeong's quarters for the night. She meticulously arranged the bedding, ensured the room was spotless, and set out her lady's nightgown.

Night fell, and Yeon-mi helped Lady Hwa-yeong prepare for bed. After bidding her lady goodnight, Yeon-mi retired to her own quarters. Despite the exhausting day, she found contentment in her work and a quiet pride in the small ways she made her lady's life more comfortable.

Yeon-mi's life was one of quiet service, her days a testament to her strength and resilience. Little did she know that her steady existence was about to be disrupted by events that would bring unexpected challenges and profound changes to her life.
