I stood in the office waiting for some sort of schedule to be handed to me. Instead, I was met with a lady at the front desk, who seemed to be tired of her job. "And who are you again?"
"Aspen Whitford," I answered. She blankly stared at me like my name didn't ring a bell. "I just transferred here... my first day was supposed to be yesterday but I had the stomach flu." That was a lie. I just didn't feel like going and since my mom was busy at work, I never got in trouble for it.
The lady sighed and shook her head in disapproval. "Skipping your first day of school is not a good look, Alex."
"My name is Aspen. Aspen Whitford. And I didn't skip, I had the stomach flu and didn't feel puking everywhere on my first day of school." Damnit I'm already getting off on the wrong foot. "Is my schedule ready or is there someone else that I need to talk to?"
"Hey, Mrs. Cope. Is the new girl ready for the tour?" A tall boy walked into the office with a big smile on his face. He looked like a scary teddy bear.
"Who are you looking for, Emmett?" The lady at the desk asked. She seemed to be in a little bit of a better mood now that Emmett was talking to her. I mean I didn't blame her, though scary-looking, Emmett was incredibly good-looking.
"Probably me. Unless you have lots of new kids transferring here each day." Considering how small this town was, they were probably lucky to get one new kid each year.
"Do you have your schedule?" Emmett asked me.
I tried to push down the annoyance I felt from the question. It wasn't his fault that Mrs. Cope couldn't do her job correctly. "Nope. I don't."
Mrs. Cope cleared her throat and started to search through stacks of papers. "And you said your name was Alex Whitley?"
"Aspen Whitford." Emmett corrected. I would've questioned how he knew that, but it would've made sense if he was told who he was supposed to be showing around.
After an awkward minute, Mrs. Cope found my schedule amid other papers. "Right, I have your schedule, Aspen." Despite it being my schedule, she handed it straight to Emmett.
"Thank you, Mrs. Cope." Emmett flashed her a charming smile before he turned to me. "Just your luck, Aspen, you have me as your tour guide."
Something seemed eerily off about Emmett. But I couldn't put my finger on it. "You don't have to show me around everywhere. I just need to know where my first class is and I'll figure the rest out."
"Our first three classes of the day are the same anyway." Emmett handed my schedule to me.
I sighed once I saw that our first class of the day was Calculus. I absolutely sucked at math. "Perfect."
"Very," Emmett said teasingly.
I looked up from the piece of paper and glared at him. My look just made him smile even more. All of his front teeth were exposed and I started to feel uneasy. "Are you always so..."
"Handsome?" Emmett asked, with a straight face.
I scoffed. "Scary?"
"I scare you?" Emmett seemed a bit hurt.
Before I could explain a bit further, or maybe apologize for hurting his feelings, I nearly fell onto my ass. Thankfully Emmett grabbed my arm to keep me from falling over.
"Watch where you're going." A girl muttered as she walked away.
I quickly turned around to address her. "Excuse me?"
She turned around to face me. "You have a pair of eyes, use them."
"What the hell are you talking about?" I stepped up to her, only to be pulled back a bit by Emmett.
