"Where is he?" Chandan checked his watch and glared at Fareeha. She shrugged, then checked her watch and pulled down the sleeve of her dusty pink jacket.
"Call him."
"I did—he is coming in five minutes." She lied, averting her gaze from him. In her mind, she knew he must be romancing with Dania. How irresponsible? But she had hardened her heart not to give him any bhaav. Also, her mother's phone call disturbed her. She was regretting returning home.
Ten minutes later, Sarfaraz arrived. Chandan scolded him, but his eyes searched for Fareeha. He desperately needed to apologize to her. At the airport, she avoided him. Even when he sat beside her, she plugged earbuds into her ears and pretended to sleep.
"What is your problem, Fareeha?"
She stared dead straight into his eyes, her brows furrowed hard, - "Don't worry, I won't be around you for long."
Sarfaraz shook his head in confusion.
"My mom called, they have shortlisted some boys for me. I am getting married soon." She said, keeping a serious expression.
"What?" His jaw dropped. He shifted, twisting half his body to face her, - "Are you kidding me." He chuckled, - "Who will marry y—" Sarfaraz shut his mouth when there was a flicker of rage in her eyes.
"Shut up." She turned to face him, placing a finger on her lips, - "I'm saying yes to the first person, my parents select and—and quit this thankless job."
The statement completely wiped out Sarfaraz's radiating smile, - "Are you serious?"
"Yes." She huffed. In haste, she unbuckled her seat belt and pulled herself up. Meekly, he called her, but she royally ignored him.
Throughout the flight, Sarfaraz kept attempting to get Fareeha's attention. But she kept earbuds plucked in her ears and her eyes never coming off the Kindle she had in her hands. The fear that he could lose Fareeha to someone else crept into his heart for the first time. That man, whoever will marry her, will get all her attention. Then where will he fit in? Throughout the flight, he kept convincing himself that no one would marry her. Ever.
Apart from his heart knew he was being selfish. Fareeha and he had always been a tight bond. Neither of them had any friends apart from each other. Now, a third person will part them. Who will he share his thoughts with? Whom will he tease? Dania? But with her there is formality and with Fareeha there is ease. He doesn't know well, yet. And will take lots of time to form a bond. Still, it won't never match the bond with Fareeha. Sarfaraz pulled down the blindfold to his eyes and concentrated on the music blaring in his ears.
