Downstairs by the poolside, Adil played guitar for Dania. She kept her eyes closed, swaying with the tune. His voice was melodious and therapeutic. She could live with this stress buster all her life. Dania's smile grew. Adil admired her. Seeing her happy and calm relaxed him as well. What he thought was light flirting and infatuation had turned into full-blown love. Mindlessly, Adil reached out to move rogue hair strands from her face. But commotions from inside the beach house distracted him.
Dania opened her eyes, and Adil turned, getting up from the beach chair. Fareeha marched with her luggage and Sarfaraz ran behind her, pleading desperately.
"What happened?"
"I never saw them fight like this before."
Adil dropped his guitar and ran inside to the gate. Sarfaraz kept imploring while Fareeha got into the back seat of the cab. The driver was uncertain, but she reprimanded him, and he drove.
"Fareeha!" Sarfaraz called, kicking the road as the car sped away.
Adil rushed to his stepbrother, - "Chote, what ha--" Before he could complete his sentence, Sarfaraz punched his face hard. He fell back. Dania reached the gate and gasped.
"Adil."
Huffing hard and fast, Sarfaraz stormed back into the house.
"Shit! Adil, your nose is bleeding." Dania helped him, straightened, and he winced. "Come," she held his shoulders and guided him past the gate, - "I will do your first aid."
Adil sat at the kitchen counter, wincing, and touched his nose. Blood in his fingers didn't alarm him. But he worried about his brother and friend. The way he was pleading, it seemed a very serious and ugly fight. Fareeha was on fire.
Dania hurried with the first aid box. She placed it on the counter and stood next to him.
"Ouch! I don't know why Sarfaraz took out his frustration on you." She plucked out some cotton and dabbed Dettol on it.
"It is--fine--he always had anger issues." Adil sighed.
"Matlab, he will hit anyone?" Dania scolded.
Adil smiled. She frowned at him.
"Thank you for caring for me, Dania."
Her eyebrows relaxed, and she smiled slightly, - "Nothing compared to the rock you have been to me. Without knowing me, you helped me so much and my mom too. I can never--"
He placed a finger on her lips, stopping her.
"I liked you the moment I saw you at the hospital. Now, my feelings for you have grown. I don't know how you feel about me, but--I love you." Adil confessed with sincerity in his eyes.
Dania smiled softly at him. Her gaze followed his, lowered. Aiming for her lips, Adil leaned. She too. Coming closer, hesitating for a moment, they went in for a kiss. Slow and steady. Assuring and comforting.
