- Can you hear me? -A few weeks had passed since I joined the group and my relationships with people had begun to grow. Dale was kind and always tried to do the right thing. Amy was sweet and innocent. Andrea was protective and was trying hard to prove her worth.
Carl was energetic and funny. Lori was most of the time very kind but if she was pissed she'd let it show. Glenn was funny and caring. Daryl was usually off doing his own thing and his brother Merle was a dick. Ed had a weird deminor to him that gave you a weary feeling whenever you were near him while his wife Carol was quiet and sweet.
Shane was different. He took control. Made sure people knew he was in charge. One moment he was angry and threatening when someone had gone against him, which was usually Ed. Other times he was sweet and gentle. Mine and his relationship was strange. One second we were getting on, the next we weren't speaking.
We were all gathered around the RV talking about the jobs that needed to be done for the day. Half the group had gone to Atlanta on a supply run, led by Glenn who wasn't to keen on taking company when he usually did the supply runs alone. As Dale was explaining something I wasn't really listening to, the radio went off
"Hello? Hello? Can anybody hear my voice?" the radio spoke. Amy was the fastest to get to it
"Hey? Hello?" she asked
"Can you hear my voice?" the voice on the radio repeated
This was so surreal. I'd never thought the radio would actually work for anyone outside of the group but here we are talking to another person. Another survivor.
"Yes I can hear you. Your coming through. Over" Amy said smiling
"Anybody who reads, please respond. Broadcasting on emergency channel. We'll be approaching Atlanta on Highway 85. Anybody who reads please respond." The radio spoke again. It was obvious now, we could hear him but he couldn't hear us
"We're just outside of the city. Dammit. Hello? Hello? He couldn't hear me. I couldn't warn him" Amy said realising now too
"Try to raise him again. Come on son. You know best how to work this thing." Dale said to shane. Shane listened, walking over to Amy and taking the radio
"Hello, hello, is the person who calls still on air? This is officer Shane Walsh broadcasting a person unknown, please respond. He's gone." Shane said
"There are others. It's not just us." Lori spoke, carl next to her
"Yeah we knew there would be right. That's why we left the CB on." Shane said
"Wait but he said Atlanta right? Poor guys taking himself to deaths door and don't even know it." I said realising what waited for the man when he got to Atlanta.
Some people probably didn't know what had happened in Atlanta and still thought it was safe. They needed some kind of warning.
"This is what I've been saying for a week. We ought to put signs up on 85 to warn people away from the city." Lori said to shane, obviously trying to prove a point
"Folks don't know what their getting into." Amy agreed
"We don't have enough time." Shane tried to instantly shut this down and walk away. I could see why. This is only going to end in an argument
"I think we need to make time" Lori carried on
"Yeah, that- That's a luxury we can't afford. We are surviving here. We are day to day." Turning back to face Lori. He didn't look impressed that she was still trying to argue her point.
Both of them were right, making it hard to choose one to defend. We did need a way to warn people away from the city. But right now with Daryl off hunting and half the group on a run we just don't have the numbers.
"And who the hell would you propose to send?" Dale asked lori, backing Shane
I didn't think I would see Dale back shane. There was something that gave me the feeling that the man didn't exactly like shane.
"I'll go. Give me a vechile." Lori said
"No one goes anywhere alone, you know that." He said. This time he gave the look. The one where you can tell he's starting to get pissed off that your not listening.
"Yes sir." Lori said realising Shane was growing fed up.
She stormed off following closely behind. The rest of the group separated to do their jobs, no longer wanting to speak about the poor clueless man.
"Too much?" Shane asked me
"Nah your fine. Your right, we need to keep our priorities straight. Just sad for the poor bastard." I reassured him
"Yeah I know." He said rubbing the back of his head
"Come on I'll help ya go get water."
