WHEREVER PHILOMENA YILDIRIM WENT, it seemed as if a dark cloud hung over her and everyone else. She could feel her legionnaires' fear, anxiety and hopelessness, always had, but it had never affected her the way it was doing now. Jason and Reyna hadn't returned, a full week after Philomena's dream and now she was beginning to feel the effects of the camp's depressing mood.
She thought that if she was far away from the worrying legionnaires, she could get a moment of peace. But even when she was alone, it felt as if dark clouds were surrounding her. Philomena tried to convince herself that it was because she was spending too much time with the other campers, however, deep down she knew that it was because she was worried.
Philomena worried over her future, her life, the life of everyone around her but also for Reyna and Jason. The two people who had not returned from their rather simple quest in weeks. The two people who held the legion up and ensured peace among the campers.
She worried that something had happened to them on their way home. She worried that they would never return, but she also tried to remain hopeful.
Her father's voice always echoed in her head, telling her that there was a greater destiny awaiting them, that they must survive.
Today Philomena hoped to get some rest. For one, she needed to relieve herself from the burden of seeing everyone fall down into misery. Secondly, she really needed to relax her body (even Alex had told her that), seeing as she had been training almost everyday for many hours in the Colosseum, without giving herself a pause.
She knew she needed to improve in every aspect of close combat and wanted to do just that. And fast.
Swimming around in the lake would've been the perfect activity to get this much needed rest, probably no one would disturb her (except Terminus) and the cold water would do wonders for her mind and body, Philomena thought as she sat in one of the many watchtowers, bored out of her mind.
Alas, life wasn't fair and as a demigod one couldn't expect to catch a break, so really this one was on Philomena for even thinking of relaxing a bit.
As soon as Philomena was about to fall asleep, her eyes heavy and her head falling back, someone next to her blew the horn. Completely lost, the girl jumped up and looked over the hills, not noticing anything out of the ordinary, but when she lifted her eyes, it hit her.
In the sky she could make out two dark figures. This could only mean trouble.
Philomena readied her bow, as if on autopilot and watched as the legionnaires on duty gathered around the gate, their weapons ready to kill whatever threat was arriving. With an arrow on the ready, she looked back up at the sky and observed the gigantic figures that came closer as each second passed, but were still too far away to shoot them.
With narrowed eyes she then noticed it; those figures in the sky weren't monsters. They were giant eagles carrying imperial gold; atop of each eagle there sat a tiny figure, one with short blond hair, the other with long dark hair that blew around in the wind.
As if on command everyone put down their weapons, slightly embarrassed by the fact that they had almost attacked the demigods whose arrival they were oh so desperately expecting.
The eagles landed, allowing Reyna and Jason to jump down from their backs and they went right back up into the air, probably to put the imperial gold torpedoes in a safer place, further away from the city.
Philomena wanted to do nothing but run down the stairs, get to Jason, hug him and check for any injuries, ask him how he was doing, but she knew that they weren't that close. It would probably be weird and if he were to reject her, Philomena would be publicly humiliated.
So she just settled on observing her surroundings from her position on the tower and the way the dark blue and black clouds began to clear up and make place for yellow and gold glow. Joy, happiness, hope, everyone (even Philomena) felt it at the sight of their most trusted fighters.
Jason and Reyna spoke to a few people, Jason's gaze wandering over the crowd of people that wanted to hear of their adventure first hand. He was looking for something, someone, but he couldn't find them and just talked to some of his friends and acquaintances.
In the meantime, Philomena had sat back in the chair she was allowed to sit on during watch and began to braid little braids into her hair and let her thoughts flow freely.
As she sat there, completely wrapped up in her own bubble, she almost forgot about all the commotion, but still her mind lingered on something that was actually bothering her quite a lot.
Why couldn't she help but be disgusted by the sight of Jason's perfectly forced smile? Why couldn't she be surrounded by the shimmering bright colors like her fellow campers? Why did she have to think about how wrong it was that Jason was lifting everyone else's mood, while he himself was surrounded by blue and black smoke?
And the most important question: Why was Jason Grace taking up so much space in her thoughts?
HOPE speaks!
