Once there was a female. Young, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, she was the light in the darkness that was many people's lives.

And everyone who met her knew that. Take the Winchesters and friends, for example.

Sam and Dean had met her way back in 2005, on a quick salt-and-burn case.

Little did Dean know that when he held a knife to her neck that time that the female would have such a great impact on their lives.

Soon, the (h/c)-haired, (e/c)-eyed woman had befriended the brothers. Her name was Y/n, L/n, and she was a fellow hunter. After their initial meeting, they split ways. But they always stayed in touch, and met up frequently for lunch or a drink.

Surprisingly, Y/n had been a constant in their hellish lives. Someone the brothers could always always lean on when the shit hit the fan.

And they owed her big time for that.

It was just going to be a simple demon hunt. Castiel, Sam and Dean met up with Y/n just to get rid of maybe half-a-dozen demons.

But oh, how wrong they were with the quantity of the monsters.

Instead of the meager quantity they had anticipated, there were at least two dozen of them.

Castiel had done his best to kill them with his "Angel-mojo", as Y/n had often called it. And of course the three human hunters were spouting off exorcisms as fast as their tongues could roll out.

But all too soon they were over-powered.

"Cas," the (h/c)-haired woman called out, stabbing demons with her own demon-knife. "Take Sam and Dean and go!"

But amidst their protests, a flash of stubbornness flashed in (e/c) eyes.

So the Angel grabbed the brothers and poofed out of there. It took only moments for him to return the boys and fly back for Y/n.

But those moments were costly.

Castiel the Angel returned with a body and intense wounds.

He quietly healed himself as the Winchester brothers tended to their fallen friend. He could tell that the kind woman had bled out quite quickly. An artery in her neck had been slashed, and thus she had bled out in seconds.

The Angel had to admit it was a good way to go.

Quick, probably painless.

A muffled sob met his ears as he mused. And then Cas felt a little guilty. Here he was, hardly mourning his friend. Y/n had shown nothing but kindness to the Angel. They had known each-other for many years, but not as long as the Winchesters.

But the more he thought of it, the angrier he became. How did Y/n deserve this?

He was determined to get revenge.

Little did he know he was not the only one thinking these thoughts. Dean was fuming. Fuming, and shaking in sorrow. Castiel could tell by the way his jaw was set.

And Sam was the worst. He was quietly sobbing over the woman he had been pining over for years. But he never did anything about it, much to the dismay of his brother.

"Hey, Y/n." Sam murmured as he stood over the simple grave-stone, a bouquet of lillies in his hands. Y/n's favourite flowers.

"I'm sorry I didn't visit earlier. It's... not been so good without you. Dean's got himself into some trouble... He's got the Mark of Cain." Then the tall brunette paused.

"Yeah, the Cain. If only you were here to help set things straight..."

Sam stooped to gently place the flowers on the grave. Y/n had always wanted to be buried and never brought back. So Sam and Dean (rather hesitantly) obeyed her wishes.

"I... I miss you, Y/n." His eyes shut against the tears that threatened to spill over in his eyes as a lump rose to his throat.

But Sam just pushed it down as he had all those other times before. "I wish I could have told you how I felt." He added in his mind before turning around and walking away the way he came.

The road he and his brother had to walk was rocky, and scary sometimes. For now, they walked it alone. But someday, Sam knew they'd see her again.

And Sam knew that he'd walk with her, no matter what happens when he sees her again.

(Kinda a Sam x Reader but not really????)
