New Rochelle 2019

Leaving the gym, slightly out of breath and pleasantly exhausted, Sierra felt a sense of calm wash over her. Distracted by her phone, she walked into the elevator and looked up, only to see Tashi standing there, an unreadable expression on her face. This caught Sierra completely off guard. She had seen Tashi before at tennis matches, fundraisers, and galas with Art by her side. She had thought of New Rochelle as an escape from all those tennis events, but seeing that familiar face, now with her hair cut short, shattered that illusion. Sierra didn't know how to feel or what to say, but those intense feelings were interrupted.

"What floor?" Tashi asked, her face expressionless, acting as if she didn't even recognize Sierra, as if she hadn't once been the person she loved with all her heart and would do anything for.

"Uh, 46," Sierra said awkwardly, caught by surprise. She glanced at the buttons and noticed that Tashi had already pressed it.

"You already pressed it," Sierra unnecessarily stated, cursing in her head as to why she felt the need to comment on that, realizing they were heading to the same floor.

"Yep," Tashi replied, her tone annoyed as she made the connection.

"So... how are you?" Sierra began awkwardly, attempting small talk.

"And Art? And your daughter?" she added, earning an unpleasant look from Tashi.

"I heard about Art's surgery..." Sierra continued, wondering why she was talking so much but unable to stop. Tashi chuckled darkly before looking at her seriously.

"What the hell are you doing here?" Tashi interrogated.

"I'm here for Phils Tire Town Challenger. Patrick's competing in it," Sierra explained, making Tashi realize there was a chance Art would go against him.

"Why are you here?" Sierra pressed. "It's not like Art's gonna compete in a Challenger," she added sarcastically, noticing Tashi tense up and realizing that Art was indeed in the Challenger.

"Oh," Sierra said, a hint of bitterness in her tone.

"Cut the shit, Sierra. Stop pretending we're friends, asking about Art and my daughter. You and Patrick need to stay the fuck away from me and my family," Tashi said sternly.

"Got it?" she asked, causing Sierra to scoff and roll her eyes.

"Oh, I got it. I'm sorry for trying to be polite and make small talk. I forgot how much of a bitch you are," Sierra retorted. Tashi chuckled, unfazed by the insult. As if on cue, the elevator door opened to their floor. As Sierra turned to leave, she delivered one last remark.

"And good luck to Art. I've seen clips of his matches, and he really needs it. I guess his coaches aren't doing their job very well," Sierra hissed, glaring at Tashi.
