"Alright thank you, officers. I assure you it won't happen again." Laurel said as she shut the door. She turned around to look at us. Belly and Conrad were sitting on the bench, Steven and Jeremiah were standing getting ready to defend us kids, and I was in the corner slouching against the wall. Laurel's face was filled with disappointment. "Are you guys kidding me?" she asked waiting for an explanation "Mom it's not that big of a deal, the cops were just looking to break up the bonfire," Steven said trying to calm her down. "Not that big of a deal? I'd say getting driven home by the cops for underage drinking is a pretty big deal, Steven," she said raising her voice. "We- were you guys smoking tonight" Steven replied after it got quiet. Once he brought it up it was all I smelled. "What! No, keep your voice down the moms are asleep in the living room," she said defensively. "Wha- I wasn't even yelling you wer-" Steven said confused as to why he getting yelled at "Laurel I just wanted you to know I didn't drink, I was the DD I swear," Jeremiah said although it wasn't really making the situation better. "And you, you're the oldest" she said to Conrad and I saw the way his face dropped. Wanting to defend him I interrupted but I was too wasted to form an actual sentence. "Laure-" I slurred "Don't even get me started Johanna because you are a mess. And just wait until your mother sees that bruise on your face. " I just stared at her knowing my mom won't care. She hasn't cared about anything other than her and my father's divorce and Gabe. One time after another one of their fights she told me, " Thank you for being so grown up about everything, I know I don't have to worry about you on top of everything else" I was 15. And maybe that was her thanking me for not causing her any more trouble, but it had a deeper meaning. What she really meant was she didn't have the time or effort to care about me. That was the first day I drank. I drank a lot and it felt so good to be carefree and not think about all the bullshit that was going on in the same house I was in. I zoned back into reality and with a single tear running down my face I said "Trust me she won't give a shit. And please stop treating me like a kid" 'Well then act like an adult" she said confused by my tone, "well then maybe you guys should too" Conrad told her. "What does that mean" she asked him and he just sat there quietly again. She seemed tired of all this, she sighed and shut her eyes. "I hope you guys understand this would've been completely different if your family wasn't your family." she told the fisher boys "We're sorry Laurel" Jeremiah answered "Just go to bed guys" she said and we all left to our rooms. I was struggling and tripping up the stairs so Laurel grabbed an ice pack and a water bottle and then helped me up to my room and into my bed. We didn't say anything until I was tucked in with the pack of peas on my bruise that was already forming. "I don't understand what's going on with you," she told me. I just stared at her, eyes filled with hurt "Nothing. Nothing is going on." that was the last thing I said before I turned my back on her and went to sleep.
