Maya's POV

Lucas has been acting weird all day. Between zoning out during almost every class and staying unbearably quiet, I could tell it was on off day of him.

As we were wondering the hallways during our free period, I decided to ask what was up.

"What's with you today?" I asked simply, not even bothering to sugar coat it.

Lucas gave me a weird look. "Why do you say that?" he avoided the question. I can tell he's slightly nervous.

I glare at him.

What is going on?

"You've not been paying attention in any class, and you haven't said a whole lot. I'd like to know what's on your mind that has you acting very," I try to think if a fitting phrase,"Not the 'Howdy partner!' cowboy I know."

He gives a nervous laugh. "Nothing that concerns you."

Nothing that concerns me?! Well, I oughta...

Lucas POV

I couldn't lie to her.

Not now.

Not ever.

But this does concern her. She has a right to know that I no longer like her best friend as more than a friend and that I have fallen hopelessly in love with Clutterbucket. She does need to know that, right?

Before I can continue with that thought, Maya interrupts me, clearly upset that I wouldn't tell her.

"It doesn't concern me? Of course it does! Lucas, I'm your friend," her words sting, knowing that she doesn't like me more than a silly little friend.

I'm left speechless. I don't know how to go about telling her that I like her without hurting anyone, if that's even possible. I'm not going to break anyone's heart.

I settle with," Don't worry about it, really," I convinced, using a soothing voice so she wouldn't get any angrier than she is now. "It's just something happening at home," my voice cracked.

Just by the way she was looking at me, I knew she could tell I was lying.

Dammit

"Come on, it can't be that bad. You can tell me, I promise I won't laugh," she cooed.

Just as I was opening my mouth to speak, the lunch bell rang through the halls. I let go of a breath I didn't even know I was holding.

"You'll tell me tomorrow," she pointed at me as she backed up. "I swear to it!" she turned her back towards me and ran down the halls.

"Crap, that was close," I mutter as I walked toward the lunch room. Luckily, not only did she have a lunch detention this afternoon, we didn't have any classes together the rest of the day.

-Later that afternoon-

Unfortunately, Maya not being around didn't stop me from dozing off during class.

I daydreamed about her, confessing my love to the girl of my dreams in front of the whole student body. I'm aware that it's a bit over the top, but I wouldn't want to do it any other way.

"Mr.Friar," Mr.Wolfe sighed, noticing that I hadn't shown interest in the lesson.

I looked up, cursing at myself for not paying attention. "Yes, sir?" I gulped.

"Label the Epicranius muscle on the board please," he demanded. He knew he had gotten me there, I was never good at anatomy anyway.

"I'm sorry sir, but I can't do that," murmured just loud enough for Mr.Wolfe to hear.

"Why not?" he asked, raising his voice. Mr.Wolfe was a big man, loud booming voice. I never understood why he would want to become a high school teacher anyway, when he easily could have become a professional football player.

"I don't know the answer," I looked down as I heard snickers from the rest of the class.

"Detention," he warned. I sighed, knowing there was no way I could get out of it.

The rest of the day went by slowly, more daydreaming, more ignoring what the teacher was saying. By 2:45, the day had finally come to a halt as I walked to Mr.Wolfe's room for detention.

When I reached the door, there was a sign on it reading," All students in my detention this afternoon, please report to Mr.Matthew's room."

Great. Now I had to deal with the interrogation from my girlfriend's father.

I got to the open door to be greeted, not by Mr.Matthews, but by the one and only Maya Hart.

"Howdy Cowboy," she mocked in her county accent. "Long time no see."

All I did was look at the smirk painted across her lips to know this was going to be a long evening.

Lucas is in for a hell of a night.

Happy that I was able to upload sooner than expected? Me too! I had a lot of time on the plane to D.C. to write.

As I think about the plot ahead, this story is going to be shorter than expected. But, depending on how well this does, I might write a sequel or start a new book or two based on other things. (Hint hint, wink wink, nudge nudge. I'll stop now)

Hope you enjoyed this chapter of "The Secret Love" (Btw, might change the name later. Let me know what you think)

Plenty of love on this Wednesday -Lucy
