Lucas POV
Detention. With Maya. When you were trying to avoid her because she wanted to know why you were acting weird. The reason you were acting weird was because you were afraid to admit you loved her. Great.
"What are you doing here," I stuttered.
This is Maya, of course she would be in detention.
"Remember the prank I pulled last week on Mrs.Robinson? Yeah," she smiled to herself as she recalled the memory," That got me two weeks detention."
"What am I ever going to do with you," I patted Maya's head. My lingering hand hovered over her head as I craved to touch her blond locks again. I fought the urge and sat down at my usual spot.
"So how did 'Mr.Moral Compass' get himself here anyway?" she asked curiously.
I reluctantly told her," I wasn't paying attention in anatomy when Mr.Wolfe asked me a question I didn't know the answer to," I shrugged.
"That's lame," she frowned but quickly changed the subject to what I had been trying to avoid. "Why were you dozing off?"
"It's been an off day," I leaned back in the uncomfortable chair. It was the truth, just not all of it.
"That reminds me," she repositions herself to look at me in the eye. "You need to tell me what's going on."
I gulped. I pondered on the possible lies I could tell her, but I found no real way to get them out without my voice cracking and giving myself away.
"You really want to know the truth?" I cautioned.
She just nodded, her eyes full of worry.
I took a deep breath and braced myself for what what to follow," I like you," I figured I wouldn't go all 'I love you' yet, but only time could tell. But as I was closing my eyes, I heard laughter.
What?
She was clutching her stomach, eyes shut, and making the most obnoxious, adorable sound that I have ever heard come out of anyone's mouth.
It almost made me smile, seeing her with a big toothy grin that I'd wish she wore more often. But then I realized what I just said and grimaced
What did she find so funny? Did she think that it was a joke?
"This isn't funny," I deadpanned.
"Yeah it is," she sat up, wiping tears of laughter from her eyes as she regained her composer. "It's funny because you're supposed to be in love with Riley."
"And why does that make me liking you so funny?"
"Because I know you're lying, and that was most ridiculous lie I've ever been told."
"I'm not lying," I shake my head.
"Sure you are. You're dating Riley right now, so, you can't like anyone else," she shrugs it off.
The irritation in my voice becomes more evident and I get louder. "Maybe I don't want to date Riley!"
"You don't want to date my best friend?"

Bit of a shorted chapter, but you guys get a cliffhanger to make up for it.I'm currently starting to write a new book called,"What I'd Do to Get You." Yes, it's another Lucaya book, but everything is much different.
