Mortal World- General Tang's Estate

Fenghuang sat in the tranquil garden of her family estate, the fragrance of jasmine and peony mingling in the warm afternoon air. The gentle hum of cicadas and the distant chirping of birds provided a soothing backdrop, but the serenity of the scene did little to calm her restless spirit. Her delicate hands rested on her swollen belly, a protective gesture that had become second nature in recent months.

She stared down the cobblestone path leading from the main house to the garden's edge, her thoughts a whirlwind of anxiety and anticipation. General Tang, her husband, was due to return at any moment from an audience with her father, Governor Feng Jian. The news from the neighbouring provinces had been grim, with outbreaks of fighting between the clans growing increasingly frequent and violent. The borderlands, once a stable buffer against external threats, now teetered on the brink of chaos.

Fenghuang had sensed the shift long before the first reports reached the governor's ears. She could see it in the lines etched deeper into her father's face, in the heavy sighs he tried to conceal, and in the restless way General Tang moved about the house when he thought she wasn't watching. The men in her life, bound by duty and honour, had tried to shield her from the harsh realities of the outside world, fearing the impact on her delicate condition. But she was not naive; she understood the gravity of their situation all too well.

The threat was not merely from the external chaos but also from within. Her father's brothers, long coveting the governorship, would not hesitate to seize upon any sign of weakness. Should the borderlands fall, it would provide them with the perfect pretext to challenge her father's authority. The thought of her family's fate hanging in the balance filled her with a dread that even the beauty of the garden could not dispel.

Her reverie was broken by the sound of approaching footsteps. She looked up to see General Tang striding towards her, his expression as inscrutable as ever. His armour, though polished and immaculate, seemed to carry the weight of countless battles, and his eyes, usually so full of determination, now bore a hint of fatigue.

"Feng," he greeted her, his voice a deep rumble that always managed to bring her a measure of comfort, even in the most trying times. He knelt beside her, taking her hand in his.

"Qianzi," she replied, her voice soft but steady. "What news from my father?"

He hesitated, a rare occurrence that did not go unnoticed by her. "The situation is grave. The fighting has intensified, and there are reports that some of the borderland clans are seeking alliances with our enemies."

She closed her eyes, taking a moment to absorb the news. It was worse than she had feared. "And my father?"

"He is concerned, but he is resolute. He will not let the borderlands fall without a fight."

"Of course," she murmured, squeezing his hand. "He is a strong leader. But what of us? What of our family?"

Qianzi's grip tightened on hers. "I have already taken measures to ensure your safety, Feng. I will not let harm come to you or our child. We have loyal soldiers who will protect you."

She looked into his eyes, seeing the depth of his resolve. "I know you will do everything in your power, Qianzi. But we must be prepared for every possibility. If the worst comes to pass, if my uncles make their move..."

"They will not succeed," he interrupted, his voice firm. "We will stand strong, together."

Fenghuang nodded, though her heart remained heavy. She could feel the tides of fate shifting, the winds of change blowing through their lives with an unstoppable force. She had always trusted in her husband's strength and her father's wisdom, but now, she sensed that it would take more than mere human effort to navigate the trials ahead.
