I HADN'T SEEN much of Peter over the following days. It was like even when he was at school, he wasn't really there.

We would share a few words in the halls, but never really long conversations.

So after a few days I decided to approach him myself and talk to him.

"I'll catch up with you later." I told Gwen at her locker and ran up to walk with Peter.

He looked over at me and I smiled at him. He pushed his hood off of his head and took out his earbuds.

"Hey." He greeted me.

"Hi." I greeted back.

"How's it going?" He asked.

"Where you headed?" I asked him back.

"Uh, Monday, B track."

I furrowed my eyebrows. "It's Thursday, though."

"It's Thursday?" He properly turned towards me and my eyes went wide at the sight of the dark purple bruise on his eye.

"Oh, my God, Peter, what happened to your eye?" I questioned him.

"Hmm?"

"It looks bruised."

"Oh, yeah, no, I don't... Maybe I got a rash, or..." He started coming up with excuses.

"That looks really bad." I told him, taking a step closer to get a better look. "Have you gone to the nurse or anything?"

He nodded and a silence grew between us.

"Do you like branzino?" I asked him and he just stared back. "You know, like, the fish."

"Mhm. No, no. I know. I know." He chuckled for a moment.

"Well, if you want..." I pulled my pen from my pocket and took a piece of paper from the notebook I was holding in my hands to write my address down. "You can come to this address at, uh, at 8:00 tonight. Gwen's mom is making branzino. So..."

"Are you allowed to just invite me to your friend's house to dinner? Don't you have to talk to them first?" Peter asked me, looking down at the slip of paper I had handed him.

"Oh, no. No, I live there too." I told him. "I have since we were, like, 7."

"Oh, right. After..." Peter stopped. "Yeah, yeah, okay."

"Yeah." I nodded. "Um, it's apartment 2016. I forgot to write that part down. I don't know why I forgot, sorry."

"I'll remember it." He told me with a smile.
