Nothing beat the feeling of flying in a chopper for Eddie. A week at a mobile base fighting enemy soldiers wasn't easy and they were all exhausted. His team was all excited to be able to get back to base and rest for a while. He was excited too, but he was more excited about finally getting to write to Evan again. This had been the longest he hadn't been able to write. He hated that they had to end their call early, especially since it was on Evan's birthday.
"Diaz, you still with us?" he heard Fender ask. He was sitting with his picture of Evan and Christopher in one hand, fidgeting with this necklace with the other. He hadn't even realized he had tuned out his team. Fender sat across from him with Michaels, Williams was next to him, and Gordon was piloting. He had been with this team since they got stationed and they had all bonded throughout their tour. Eddie was the youngest out of all of them, just by a few years, They had all taken him under their wing when he got base, and he was glad to have such a great team backing him up.
"Too busy daydreaming," Gordon said. They were always messing with him when it came to Evan. He used to not be able to talk about his partner without getting emotional. He still did from time to time, but he was finally able to open up with his team after a while.
"You and that picture," Williams teased.
"Leave me alone," he said, rolling his eyes. He put the picture back in his uniform pocket.
"It's cute. Obsessive, sure. But cute," Williams laughed.
"If being obsessed with my husband and my child is a crime then lock me up," Eddie said. He saw his teammates all freeze, shock filling their faces.
"Husband?" Fender said, breaking the silence. "When did that happen?"
"On leave," Eddie blushed. "Couldn't wait any longer. It wasn't anything big."
"Diaz the stud," Michaels said, reaching over to hit Eddie's shoulder. "Just couldn't wait to tie that man down, huh?"
"Shut up," he laughed, looking out the window of the chopper. It was starting to get dark out, but he was hoping they would be back at base soon.
"Man, I could have only wished to be where you are when I was your age," Gordon said. "You got yourself a good one, Diaz. Don't let him go."
Eddie had been worried about telling his team that he was dating a man when he finally decided to tell them about Evan. He was scared to put up pictures of Evan or have the letters from Evan out in their bunk. He found that he didn't have to be though. His whole team was obsessed with Evan and Chris and loved hearing about the letters Eddie would write to them.
They talked for a while about what they all had planned once they got home. Fender and Gordon only had a few more months left before their tours were over. They had both been on multiple tours at this point in their careers but they both had a passion for what they were doing. Fender had been talking about retiring after this one. He said he had missed too much at home. Gordon would probably be back right after this tour. He was obsessed with army life and loved what he did. Williams had a wife and daughter at home. He was serving his time after the army had paid for his college. He had a few more years left. Michaels was the closest to Eddie's age, just a year older. He joined to try and please his parents but he found that he loved the feeling of comradery the army gave him.
While they were talking, an alarm at the front of the chopper started going off.
"Gordon, what's going on?" Eddie asked.
"Radar is going off. We got enemy choppers on our tail," he replied. As soon as he said that, gunfire could be heard right outside of the chopper. Eddie and the rest of his team leaned away from the windows
