Evan jumped off the engine, closing the door behind him. He and the rest of his team had just gotten back from a call. It was finally lunch time and Bobby had promised to cook for them today. That was something that Evan loved about his job. They were really like a family. They did so much together, including sitting down and eating meals together on shift. It was something that he never got with his own family.
He had been with his team for about five months now and the bond he formed with them was something that he never could have imagined. There was Hen, who was always so supportive and loving. She was always someone Evan could go to when he needed to talk about anything. There was Chimney. Evan had still yet to learn how he got the nickname. Chimney was someone who could always make him laugh and almost like an older brother figure.
Then there was Bobby. Bobby had taken Evan under his wing from the second he walked into the station. On every call, Bobby was always making sure that Evan wasn't doing anything too crazy. He was making sure that Evan took care of himself both at the station and outside the station. Bobby would text him to make sure that he and Chris were ok, send him home with leftovers after a rough shift, he even wrote to Eddie to let him know that Evan was pulling some stunts on calls. Evan couldn't be more thankful for him.
Bobby was the father figure that Evan always wanted. He and Bobby would sit up in the loft on late night shifts and talk about life, about different experiences they'd both been through. He would even teach Evan recipes when they had time. Evan told him everything about his parents, about Maddie, and about Eddie and Christopher. Bobby would sit and listen, actually listen. Evan couldn't explain how thankful he was for him.
"I'm starving," Evan sighed, walking up the stairs to the loft.
"You're always hungry, Buck," Chimney laughed.
"I'm a growing boy, Chim," he joked. "I need all the sustenance I can get."
Everyone made their way to the table, finally being able to take a breath after a busy morning. Bobby made his way out of his office before going into the kitchen.
"I took us offline for a few hours. Give you guys a chance to actually eat and rest up. Buck you want to help with lunch?"
"Sure, Cap," Evan smiled, jumping up to join him.
"You're in a good mood, Buck," Hen commented, looking up from the medical textbook she was reading.
Evan had been in a great mood for the last few days. Next week, Eddie was coming home for his first leave and Evan didn't think he could be more excited. He would be home for two whole weeks. Bobby had approved his time off request almost immediately, knowing that Evan wouldn't be able to focus on anything other than Eddie the entire time he was home.
"Yeah I guess so," he shrugged, chopping up vegetables for Bobby.
He still hadn't told anyone else on the team about Eddie or Chris. It wasn't that he didn't want to. He did. He wanted to brag about his amazing kid and boyfriend and tell everyone how much he loved them and how proud he was of them. It wasn't that he didn't trust his team because he had come to trust them with his life. It was just that it was so much harder to talk about than he expected. He could tell Bobby but he had a feeling that was just because Bobby had known since the beginning.
He helped Bobby put lunch together for a bit before he felt his phone start buzzing in his pocket. He pulled it out and saw that it was Carla calling him. He felt his stomach drop. Carla was watching Chris today and all he could think was that something was wrong. Evan excused himself and stepped out of the kitchen before making his way down to the locker room and answering.
"Carla, what's going on? Is everything ok?" he asked.
"Everything's fine, Buckaroo," Carla sighed. "At least with Chris."
