It hadn't snowed in a while, so all the snow had melted, resulting in frozen mud everywhere. Frozen, because the weather didn't get any warmer. On the contrary, it felt even colder. The moment Jungkook got out of his house, spikes of ice were entering his clothes and his every pore.Mumbling curses at the weather and any other factors related to the cold, he walked to the bus stop. Who the hell set this system up that school must start early in the morning? It was 7am, and the sky was still dark as shit. No wonder it was cold. It was basically still night.
At the bus stop, he realized that he had forgotten to bring a scarf. No, yeah, it was a good start to the day.
From a distance he heard footsteps before seeing the actual man they belonged to. Taehyung. Oh no. The younger had purposely gone out earlier so they wouldn't bump into each other on the way, but they had to take the same bus anyway. He had only delayed the inevitable.
He tried not to stare as the older made his way to him. They would greet each other and it would be fine, surely.
When Taehyung's steps slowed, finally close enough, Jungkook looked up and outstretched his arm. "Morning," he greeted.
Taehyung looked unfazed, eyes moving from his face to the hand in front of him. After a tense moment, he shook Jungkook's hand, mumbling a "morning" in return and looking away.
Okay, greeting check. That should be enough for now. He was still mad, but not mad mad. Jungkook could work with that.
He'd have to work with the cold first because this weather had no mercy. He hunched his shoulders, rubbing his hands in front of him. The collar of his jacket was not big enough to hide his chin in it. Jungkook knew he deserved a lot of bad things, but couldn't they be delayed a bit?
Maybe he was being dramatic, shivering and cursing the chilly air around him, but he'd think about it later after– a sigh was heard near him and suddenly a scarf was wrapped around his neck.
Taehyung was in front of him, impassive, as he gave him the scarf, placing it neatly and tucking some of it in Jungkook's collar for it to stay there. Jungkook's neck was warm, but it wasn't only because of the scarf. He didn't have to...
"Thanks," Jungkook said, raising his hand to pull it away from his mouth. His fingers briefly grazed Taehyung's, but this time, the older was the one to pull away, stepping to the side. Despite feeling a pang in his chest, Jungkook blushed at the contact.
Everything was different now with the knowledge that Jungkook liked Taehyung. Every touch, every eye contact, every interaction was making him act up. But they weren't on good terms. Hell, Taehyung had never pulled away first from anything. He was the one who teased Jungkook all the time.
The bus stopped in front of them. Jungkook hadn't heard it coming. No surprises there. When Jungkook entered, it was weirdly empty. He chose the seat on the right row, close to the middle of the bus; the one he usually chose with Taehyung.
The older got in after him, glancing around. They made eye contact for a second, and Taehyung started walking forward. Jungkook let out a relieved breath. He was going to sit next to him like—
Taehyung passed by their usual seats, aiming for one on the left row, a little behind.
...
Now that. That hurt.
What the fuck was his problem? First he returned Jungkook's greeting and shook his hand, even gave him his scarf, and now he sat away from him without a word. What were they, five?
Fine. Jungkook fished out his wired earphones from his backpack and leaned on the window, choosing a random playlist to listen to. He was well aware that he was pouting like a kid; he gave up trying to hide his displeasure. Taehyung would give up the silent treatment at some point. He had to.
This bus ride had been the longest bus ride ever, aside from the most boring one.
At school, again, it was inevitable for them to interact. They were sitting next to each other, as usual. Jungkook considered these habits of theirs both a blessing and a curse at the moment. He wanted to talk to the older so much it made him look stupid, stealing glances at him constantly.
Seeing as the silent treatment continued, he clicked his tongue in annoyance. Maybe they did need a day like this, with no talking. They had never needed one, but there's a first for everything. Jungkook just kept lying to himself for a while, unable to focus on anything and very angry because of that.
"Hey, you two!" Someone slammed their hands on their shared desk. Startled and still angry, Jungkook was bit his tongue in an attempt to keep himself from snapping at the person. People were leaving the class behind him, and it dawned on him that it was already break.
It was one of the guys they had shared a car with on the way to the New Year's Eve party. Damn, that seemed so far away now.
"You down to go to the pool?"
"Huh?" Jungkook raised his eyebrows at him. "It's winter, dipshit. What pool are you talking about?"
The guy scoffed. "Yeah, so what? You scared?"
"Of hypothermia, yeah, a little."
"It's an indoor pool, dude. Mingyu's friend is rich and his dad has this hotel nearby. He's gonna let us chill by the pool before officially opening it. It's a new extension for it, I think." At Jungkook's doubtful face, he insisted. "Come on, man. We haven't hung out like this in a while. Plus, Mingyu's bringing the goods," he winked, lowering his voice.
It took a second for the implication to settle in Jungkook's brain. Drugs, huh. He hadn't had any in months. He remembered looking for some at the New Year's party, but he couldn't find the boys. Considering the state he was in right now, he could use some—
"You do know a hotel has smoke detectors, no?" Taehyung joined the conversation. There goes Jungkook's attempt to forget the older was there.
The guy looked at him, unimpressed. "It's not officially open. They're not active."
"I don't think—"
"I'm down," Jungkook interrupted. He did want to go. He also wanted to check if Taehyung would avoid him again.
"My man!" Their friend shook his hand with a smile. "I knew I could count on you."
Jungkook's smile didn't reach his eyes, but he tried to reciprocate the energy nonetheless. Looking to the side, he caught Taehyung already staring at him, clenching his jaw. This was the third time today they had made eye contact. Each time, there was more tension in it than before.
"Of course you're down," the older sighed. He didn't like that tone, but bit his tongue instead of asking what his friend had meant. Taehyung stared at him again, as if searching for something. Jungkook tried to put up a challenge in his eyes, which the older seemed to notice. "Fine," Taehyung said, looking up at the other boy. "We're both coming."
The younger visibly relaxed while the other two continued the conversation and made plans. He was glad Taehyung was going, but was it really a good thing when they were still like this?
