Last day of school before winter break. No one was paying attention in class that day. The two best friends were no exception. They were the loudest ones."Jungkook and Taehyung! How many times must I tell you to be quiet?" the teacher roared for the nth time that hour.
"Sorry, miss!" Jungkook said, still laughing.
"You're not sorry at all," Taehyung playfully hit his shoulder.
"You're damn right," the younger said, which was followed by even more laughter.
The woman shook her head. "If you are going to keep being like this just get out of my class. Now. Come back when you calm down."
The boys stood up and walked to the door as slow as they could, with a straight face. On the hallway, they grinned at each other.
"The lesson is almost over anyway." Jungkook said. He suggested going for a smoke.
"Ah shit," Taehyung was searching his pockets. "I forgot my pack at home."
"You got a lighter?" Taehyung nodded. "Then it's fine, take a cig from me."
Once they were outside, behind the school building, Jungkook pulled out a pack of cigarettes and asked for the lighter. Taehyung motioned him to come closer and carefully lit the cigarettes in Jungkook's mouth.
They made eye contact for a second, then Taehyung laughed, which made the younger do the same. "Sometimes you look way too innocent to be smoking." The older said. "By the way, don't give me a whole cig, just let me take a few puffs from yours. I don't wanna stay out too long, it got colder."
Jungkook ended up finishing the first half of the cigarette and giving the rest to Taehyung, who groaned in relief while blowing the smoke towards the sky. His jaw was angled just right, his eyes closed, his black hair carefully covering his forehead, a bit frizzy from the cold. Another perfect picture. Another set of odd thoughts in Jungkook's head.
Or perhaps it was even worse that he wasn't exactly thinking anything. He was staring again.
"Jungkook? You good?" Taehyung asked.
"I think I'm getting sick." he looked away.
"What? No way, man, don't get sick right when winter break is about to start! We have plans!"
Taehyung looked at the cigarette and tossed it in the snow. It wasn't even done. "Let's go take our stuff and leave."
"We got one more class-"
"You never cared about that." It was true. They both didn't care about classes much. As long as they passed, all was good. But Jungkook felt like he was the only cause for skipping now, instead of both of them just leaving to do something else for fun.
"I don't wanna skip just to go home earlier. I would only get lectured." he whined.
"Who said you're going to yours?" the older chuckled while walking back towards the high school building.
So they were going to Taehyung's. Jungkook hesitated, then shook his head and followed him. It's not like it was the first time going there. They would always have fun at his house. After taking their things, they rushed to catch the earlier bus. Another rusty bus that was hanging on for dear life every second. This time, at least, Jungkook thought, Taehyung dressed warmly.
Before they entered the house, Taehyung warned: "My parents are still home. They leave in 2 days, right before Christmas. We're gonna have a blast that night." he winked and opened the door. Although he knew the older meant getting wasted, Jungkook's face still flushed. Must have been the fever getting to him.
Taehyung's parents were great people, don't get it wrong. They gave their son everything he needed and asked for. And they loved him a lot. It was just... the distance. They worked abroad often, so it was inevitable that Taehyung and them would become distant; even though they checked on him. At least they were pretty laid back.
Taehyung's mother was the first to check when the boys entered the house.
"Oh my! Jungkook! It's nice to see you again!" she smiled and hugged him. She was an affectionate woman, especially with him. Jungkook was the only friend Taehyung would bring over. They were all too familiar by now."Hello Mrs. Kim! How are you?" the younger greeted.
"Wonderful, honey, thank you. Oh, but you're red as a tomato. Are you alright?" the woman touched his forehead with the back of her hand to check his temperature.
"You must be freezing. Be careful and don't catch a cold! Go upstairs to Taehyung's room.""Don't worry, mom. I got it." Taehyung hugged his mom and led Jungkook to his room after they took off their shoes.
On the stairs, the younger tripped, which panicked Taehyung, so he grabbed his wrist and didn't let go until they were up in his room. Jungkook's face was still red, this time from embarrassment. But also..
"You can let go of my wrist now." he said.
Taehyung let go of it and scratched the back of his head. "My bad, I was thinking about something."
The room was plain and simple, but messy. Dark blue walls, a king-sized bed in the corner with ruffled sheets, one nightstand next to it, and a desk by the window, full of notebooks and papers that Taehyung didn't bother putting away. Some clothes were on the floor and he quickly picked them up and went to put them in the dirty laundry basket.
"It's a mess." he said helplessly, his ears turning red. Not that Jungkook cared much; he wasn't new to this. And if his own room didn't look any better, why judge this one?
The only thing he would check when he came over here was the corner with the bed. Taehyung had developed a bad habit of writing on the walls next to his bed. Usually important dates, which were later covered by a huge X; quotes or lyrics he liked at the moment; passwords (which Jungkook talked him out off because it was stupid and unsafe), and sometimes just random scribbles. It was the part of the room that screamed 'Taehyung' the most. His personality flowed through that almost intelligible writing, through those lines and strokes that transformed the wall into a canvas. A journal.
The important dates he never cut were his parents' birthdays, his own under them, Jungkook's birthday, and Christmas and New Year's. The last two were important because it was their tradition to spend them together every year. They'd been talking about it for weeks now.
And of course this was a good opportunity to check on those details again.
