Chapter 5: Little steps
────────────────DAENERYS TARGARYEN
━━━ I'VE BARELY been handed a day of leisure ever since I freed and claimed myself as queen of Meereen. I surely knew how much work it would take to keep it just and peaceful. I just did not expect it to mostly consist of sitting here on my throne for hours to hear and hand my people their needs. Perhaps expected more action. Something that feels rather selfish to desire after all the fighting that's happened for centuries.
I watch intently as the old wrinkled man some steps away from me speaks in a language I cannot understand while Missandei translates from beside me. The same way she has for hours now.
"He says that there has recently been more sick than usual." My welcoming smile slowly turns into a worried frown. "Men, woman, and children unable to seek the necessary aid have either joined the gods or close to it."
"Why hasn't this been brought to me before?" I did not become queen so people under my wing would die. It is my right to be informed of things before blood has begun to spill. I stare at the nervous man as he speaks up a response.
"He says they believed it could be treated with their common herbs, but they were wrong. It's some sort of poison they believe runs through their primary source of water." The man stops speaking and looks up at me with hope. "And, what about other wells and rivers? Are those contaminated as well?" I asked.
Missandei translates his response again, "He says not all are able to walk such distances for a simple vase of water. The old are tired and the young don't blink an eye to help."
For a moment I doubt myself and what I can come up with as a solution. But after sharing one look with Daario's confident one I speak up. A bit unsure at first, but stern when I finished.
"Very well. No water will meet any woman's, child's, or man's mouth without intense purification of it first. I will have Daario and some unsullied work on boiling stations for all to use." I smile widely at the sight of the old man grinning in relief before bowing and leaving. But it doesn't last long at the remembrance of the families that must have passed away. The ones I could have protected.
"My queen," I turn to look at Barristan. He had mentioned before how he would be patrolling the streets with some of the Unsullied. I did not seem fond of the idea at first. Him being my most experienced advisor after Jorah's betrayal but decided to allow him in the end. I wished to become accustomed to making certain decisions myself. And I believe I'm getting good at it. "Yes, Ser Barristan?"
