on Christmas Eve, it was just another day for him, sitting alone on a snow-covered bench in the park.
he watched quietly as children his age played in the snow, their parents nearby. the absence of his own parents made him unusually mature for his thirteen years.
he didn't believe in Santa Claus anymore, not since he witnessed his parents' tragic death three years ago. there would be no presents under the tree that could fill the void they left behind.
tears welled up in his eyes as he sat silently, unnoticed by most, until a girl his age approached him, her coat matching the snow around them.
"move aside," she said abruptly, snapping him out of his thoughts.
confused, he shifted over, making room for her. she sat down beside him with an air of annoyance, but soon her irritation softened into playful banter.
"you look like a pig while crying" she commented making jeongguk to threw her a glare.
"you're looking like a hippo. did i say anything?" he commented also making her laugh at her own roast.
they exchanged teasing remarks, and despite himself, he found a small smile forming.
"what did your mom gift you?" she eventually asked, breaking the silence.
jeongguk hesitated, then quietly replied, "my mom is a star now, with my dad. they're not here."
the girl leaned in and whispered a secret of her own-she was adopted, and her real parents were also stars. their shared loss drew them closer, forging an unexpected bond on this cold Christmas Eve.
"what's your name?" she asked
"jeongguk!" jeongguk replied with a smile.
"ask me" she whined after sometime to which jeongguk asked "what?"
"huh? fool, my name" she pouted with a glare.
"okay what's your name?" he asked
she smiled reaching her hand out "yoonji-" her words cut off by jeongguk who completed her words "- the hippo"
they both laughed at this and yoonji remarked "and you gguk-the pig" she laughed, their eyes teared up laughing holding their stomach.
