jeongguk’s heart shatters as he watches taehyung, so fragile, lying in the hospital bed. he can barely breathe, choking on the words taehyung had said to him.
disease... few months left... dy-ing.
it’s incomprehensible. it can’t be true. none of it feels real.
taehyung has to be okay. he needs to be okay. why would he say he only has few months left to be with jeongguk?
and after that…?
jeongguk can’t bear to think of it. how can he exist without taehyung? how can he keep going, stripped of the only person who makes life worth living?

"taehyung... what's this?" jeongguk's voice shook as he gently wiped the blood from taehyung’s wrist, his fingers trembling over the thin iv line taped to taehyung's skin. fear and confusion clouded his dark eyes, and his heart pounded painfully in his chest.
he didn’t want to hear anything bad.
not now.
not ever.
“stop crying. i’m alive… here,” jeongguk said, his own voice breaking as he gently brushed away taehyung's endless stream of tears. each tear felt like a dagger, a reminder that he might have lost him if he’d been just a little later.
"tell me, taehyung. you said you were scared to tell me. what is it?” his hands tightened around taehyung’s, desperate, as if holding on to him could somehow keep him safe forever.
"why are you crying, baby? are you all okay?" jeongguk’s voice was barely a whisper, fear lacing every word.
taehyung couldn’t meet his gaze. instead, he buried his head into jeongguk’s shoulder, his arms wrapping around him tightly, as if trying to fuse their souls together, as if he could protect jeongguk from what was coming, even though he knew he couldn’t. he wished he could freeze this moment, lock them in an embrace that could last forever. but he couldn’t.
