"Your daughter saved his life." "We don't have a daughter." "Jaime. Jaime saved his life, she's in there with him right-"
The door to the bedroom slammed open as Jaime shot up, falling right off the side of the bed as she slammed back first into the floor and groaned, covering her hip with her hand. She'd bled through the bandage overnight.
"Oh, my boy! My baby boy!" Lori cried out, standing by his side. Jaime sat up slowly, nauseous from the blood loss. Rick walked up to her, helping her off the floor as he cried quietly. "Thank you. For saving our son." He hugged Jaime, squeezing her tight for a moment. "Thank you."
"Jaime, I need to speak with you." Hershel spoke, peeking his head into the door way.
She stood up slowly, walking out into the hallway nearly passing out as Hershel grabbed her. "Have you eaten?" "No, I fell asleep before I could." "Come, sit. Need to get food in your system."
"I've never fainted before, I mean after giving blood." "I know, but now's different." Hershel opened their refrigerator, pouring Jaime a glass of orange juice as he sat it on the table next to her and disapeared down the hallway for a brief moment, coming back with a armful of medical supplies as he sat down next to her. "I've told Lori and Rick the same thing, just didn't want to wake you." "Okay?"
"He's out of danger for the moment, but I need to remove the remaining fragments." Hershel lifted her shirt up, pulling off the bandage slowly as Jaime winced and gasped, "You mean there's more? I thought you said you were done?" "In the moment I was done, his body wouldn't have been able to handle anymore." She nodded her head. "How are you going to do it? He was screaming and in a panic already." "I know, and that was the shallowest one. I need to go deeper to get the others." He used a few pieces of gauze to soak up the blood, dabbing it dry and putting some antibacterial cream on it, putting a new gauze and bandage over it, taping it to her side.
"Oh, god." Jaime sighed, picking up the glass of orange juice taking a couple sips as she placed it back down.
"There's more. His belly's distended, his pressures dropping, which means there's internal bleeding. A fragment must have nicked one of the blood vessels, I have to open him up, find the bleeder and stitch it. And he can't move while I'm in there, I mean at all. If he reacts the same as before, I'll sever an artery and he'll be dead in minutes. To even try this, I have to put him under. I need a respirator, tubes and more surgical supplies. I sent Otis, and another member of your group out, Shane, out to find supplies and bring them back here."
Jaime nearly choked at his words. "Shane? Shane's here?"
"Yes. If they can get all those supplies I can try to save him." Hershel's eyes looked hopeful, relaxing Jaime's worries. "Now, on to you. How are you feeling?" "Me? Just really sore." "Are you sure?" Hershel gave her a doubtful look, sighing as he spoke, "Jaime, you've got a black eye and a broken nose, and anytime someone raises their voice in the slightest you start sweating.
Jaime was taken aback by his quick analysis, she had completely forgot about the beating her mother gave her. "I had a rough childhood." "That doesn't explain your injuries." "Shit happens, you know?" She scratched the back of her neck anxiously, now hyper aware of the sweat beading down her forehead and her shaking hands. "I'll fix you something warm to eat." He sighed.
She sat at the kitchen table for awhile, talking with Hershel as he made her a plate of chicken and gravy, some canned corn and rice. She ate the entire plate, thanking Hershel for his kindness. They talked for another two hours, talking about life before the apocalypse and even memories of childhood.
