CHAPTER 2

Ren and Rey broke apart as the screams pierced the air. Their eyes shot to Finn and Poe in the bushes, and they quickly sprang back, staring at the pair with embarrassment and shock written all over their faces.

Rey's cheeks were flushed a deep red, and the tips of Ren's ears had turned slightly pink.

Poe was the first to recover from his disbelief, and he leaped out of the underbrush with his blaster drawn, its barrel trained directly between Ren's eyes.

"Poe, wait!" Rey cried out, but Poe had already pulled the trigger and a crimson beam shot right at Ren's head. Rey's eyes widened, and she reacted instinctively. She leapt forwards, her hand outstretched, and caught the bolt in her palm with a loud 'hiss'.

"Rey!" Finn shouted, his face filling with concern as he watched smoke curl from her closed fist.

"Oh my god, Rey! Why would you do that?" Poe exclaimed, equally livid, but concerned for the safety of his friend. But his words were dying in his throat as he watched Rey open her hand revealing unblemished skin. No scorch marks, no blood, no injury of any kind. The blaster bolt had seemingly vanished into thin air. Somehow, impossibly, she had caught the beam of plasma in her hand.

"Rey, how did you...kriff it! Tell me later. Right now, you need to tell me why you are defending that monster! Get out of the way!" He raised his blaster again, only to have it fly out of his hand and into Rey's, where she dropped it on the ground beside her with a metallic clatter.

"No Poe! Don't hurt him!" She pleaded, panic edging into her voice as she moved to stand in front of Ren, positioning herself between him, and Poe's wrath. Though it was a bit of an empty gesture, as she was at least a foot shorter than him, her expression clearly showed her determination to stand by her word.

Finn emerged from the bushes now, approaching her slowly with his arms raised above his head in what he hoped was a calming gesture. "Rey," He said in a tone that he hoped sounded non-threatening to her. "We just want to talk."

"I don't." Said Poe. He had no weapon, but was still just as ferociously mad as he was before. His entire body coiled like a spring, wound to the breaking point, and teeming with dangerous, unpredictable energy. His gaze was narrowed to near-slits, as if he hoped to incinerate Ren with a single, searing glare. Leaned forward as he was, he strongly resembled a stampeding rath-bull preparing to charge down an opponent. His fierce and unrelenting anger made him a formidable rival. "Rey, how could you let him come back here after everything he's done?! Is this why you've been holed up in your bunk all those weeks? He knows the location of the base now! He could slaughter us all in our sleep with nothing but his fingertips! The new government that we have been working on so hard would be destroyed! Gone! Rey do you-"

"Yes Poe, I know what I did!" Rey interrupted with a shout. "But it's not what-"

"Then let me kill him!" Poe yelled, not caring to hear her out. He lunged suddenly for his blaster, but Rey was quicker, kicking it out of the way just in time, and using the force to firmly push him back and away from Ren. Her other hand flew behind her to stop Ren, who had taken a step forward.

Ren paused immediately and directed his attention at Rey instead of at Poe, who was getting back off the ground with a snarl. "Ben, just stay still." She hissed at him. He nodded at her, and regressed back to standing still as a statue behind her.

For a moment, Rey stood between the two men, her arms outstretched, keeping them both at bay as Poe recovered his fury.

"Poe, calm down," Finn said, trying frantically to de-escalate the "Let's just all take a deep breath. Rey, what Poe was trying to say, is that we would appreciate some answers as to why that monster is standing in our camp!" He shot Poe a demanding glare. "Right, Poe?" Poe glared at Finn but then focused his attention back on Ren. He knew there was no getting through Rey. Her abilities in the force far outweighed his skill and Finn's combined. Instead, he opted to play along with Finn's strategy of verbal negotiation in the meantime, until he came up with another plan to dispose of Ren. "Fine. Whatever, let's talk." He put out his hand demandingly. "But I get my blaster back."
