CHAPTER 4
"Thank you so much, Senator Zembas," Poe said, escorting the elderly Twi'lek woman to her shuttle. He slowed his pace to accommodate her frail legs, his boots echoing on the landing pad. "We really appreciate your contribution to our cause."
"Oh, it's no problem at all, General!" she replied brightly, her large bug eyes sparkling with warmth behind her thick glasses. "My people will be relieved to hear that the negotiations went smoothly, and that we can resume our harvest in peace."
"I'm glad to hear it," Poe said with a laugh, watching as she carefully boarded her ship. "I know it wasn't an easy decision, but your leadership has been fundamental in bringing peace to the galaxy."
Senator Zembas turned back to him, her eyes shining with gratitude. "Thank you, General. That means a great deal coming from you. I must say, I'm impressed by the progress you've made with the Resistance. You have a true leader's spirit."
Poe smiled, feeling a sense of pride and purpose. "We're just trying to do what's right, Senator. We have a long way to go, but with allies like you, I know we can make a difference."
As Senator Zembas's shuttle vanished into the distance, Poe's smile dropped, and he let out a relieved sigh, running his fingers through his frazzled hair and cursing softly under his breath. His final meeting had been a nightmare, and he couldn't be happier that the day was finally over. With a weary expression, he mentally tallied his remaining tasks: eight documents to approve by tomorrow morning and four planetary regulations to study before their next Coruscant mission.
"Why shouldn't we have another war you ask? Simple! It's too much paperwork!" He growled to himself as he turned to leave.
"Isn't that the truth." Said a voice behind him.
Poe turned to find Leia standing behind him, her gaze still fixed on the sky where the senator's ship had disappeared. Her presence was a surprise, as she was supposed to be signing treaties in her office.
"And since I fought in two wars, I got to do the paperwork twice," Leia said with a wry smile, her eyes crinkling at the corners.
Poe chuckled. "Not in a hurry to do it again I see?" He teased.
Leia laughed. "Not particularly."
Leia laughed, her expression softening. She approached Poe slowly, her hand reaching up to touch his cheek. "Poe... how are you doing with all of this?" she asked, her voice gentle.
Poe knew she was referring to the whole Ren situation, and he paused, not quite sure how to answer. "I..I think I'm coming to terms with it." He said finally. "I'm more so just going to miss Rey." He admitted, his voice a little softer.
Leia's expression turned sympathetic. "It's not going to be forever," she said. "Once the planetary leaderships establish a stronger foundation, they won't need a 'rebel alliance' to manage the law-making process anymore. We can spread out, explore new planets, maybe even settle down along the way." She smirked, her hand gesturing towards the rebel base below them. "We'll find a new sense of purpose,"
Poe followed Leia's gaze to the landing pad, where Zorii was walking by with a large number of new recruits. His face flushed bright red. "General!" he stammered, trying to compose himself.
Leia laughed, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "You're young Poe, you have all the time in the world to figure it out."
Poe was still blushing furiously, but Leia continued. "I just mean that even though it may hurt, Rey has to leave, but it doesn't mean that you'll never see her again. Everyone just needs some time to adjust after the war."
