~Scott~
"Hello?"
"Yes, Scott?"
"I was wondering if, you know, we could hang out today? Catch up a bit? It's been a few weeks since I've seen you." I muttered, nervous.
"Um, sure. I'll meet you at the cafe across the mall in half hour?" She replied, sensing her awkwardness through her voice.
The situation felt like our high-school years all over again. The awkward first calls and fast talking.
"Um, yeah. Sounds great." I told her, sounding casual as if this phone call does not affect me in any way.
"Okay? I'll see you later, bye." She said quickly before hanging up.
I put my phone down and smile at my shoes. It's like high school started over again.
flashback
"Scott, you know she's only a few steps away." Mitch whispered, nudging my side.
I clutched onto the letter in my hands. 9th-grade dance is a huge deal now, since it was our first dance. All the girls in our grade that are single are slowly decreasing in numbers and I heard Chris Matthews was going to ask my crush out. I had to make a move.
"D-Do you think she'll say yes?" I stuttered. my legs shaking as I saw her walk in the cafeteria.
"Of course she'll say yes! You just got the lead in the play! She loves theater kids!" Mitch reassured, stabbing his food with a plastic fork. "Just stand up and ask her!"
I took a deep breath, then stood up and walked to her group of friends at the corner table in the cafeteria.
I heard the giggles of her friends as one catches my eye and warns her friends, including her, and they all go quiet.
"Hey Scott!" Mackenzie greeted cheerfully. She was my choir friend and we were close, but I wasn't here for her.
"Um, Kirstie?" I said quietly.
She turns to my direction, her long brown hair cascaded over her shoulders as she locked her brown eyes with my blue ones.
"Oh, Scott! Hey!" She smiled. Oh that smile.
"So, um I was just wondering, if, you know, I mean if you're not going with anyone...." I mumbled.
She giggled. "What is it, Scott?"
"Do you want to go to the dance with me?" I blurted out. Her friends gasped, one dropping her fork in shock. Oh God what have I done!
"Oh My God, Yes!" She squealed, standing up and hugging me tightly. "Of course I would!" She said cheerfully in my ear as she hugged me tighter.
I stumbled back, but hugged her back anyways. Half of the cafeteria had their eyes on us. I chuckled.
"You have no idea how long I've waited for you to ask that." She confessed, blushing.
"Really? That's so cool." I replied. "So, when can we hang out before the dance?" I asked her.
"Um, we could go to the mall tomorrow after school." She suggested.
"Yeah! Let's go to the movies! Tickets on me." I offered.
"Then it's a date." She smiled.
"A date it is." I replied and pulled her into another short hug.
end
As I opened the door's to the cafe, the warm and pleasing smell of coffee beans entered my nostrils.
What I liked about this place is because it was always empty. No one knew about this place, and that also meant no cameras clicking every second.
I order my usual, and sit down in one of the couple tables that have the view of the luscious trees and the run down rock path going here. Bushes and benches and bonfires were scattered around. Typical California surroundings.
I heard the door open as the bell rang, Kirstie walking in wearing a flowy white top, skinny jeans, and of course, heels. But not as high as they usually are. Oh the struggles of her being pregnant.
She greets the barista and catches my stare. She sends me a small smile before handing her money to the cashier.
Little does she know I already paid for it. The cashier declines the money and explains the situation.
She gives up and places the money back in her wallet. She walks up to me and sighs in defeat. "Really?" She raises her eyebrows.
I shrugged. "I knew what you were going to get." I answered.
She sighs again and sits across me. "So, how's everything so far?" I ask to start the conversation.
"Oh, a lot." She chuckles. "I'm always in the studio, appointments, interviews, Scarlett. Scarlett's been a handful these past few weeks." She shook her head as she said our daughter's name.
"Speaking of." She sang, taking out her phone from her pocket. She taps it a bit before handing it to me, which displayed a video.
I raise my eyebrow and press play.
"Hi Daddy!" She greets cheerfully into the camera.
"I miss you so much! I have so many new toys. Mommy only opened half of it because it was so many!" She squealed. She smiles to the camera, the showing me every single one of her new toys and their names.
"When are you coming back home, Daddy? I want to play princess and tea party with you. Mommy's always busy now. And my little siblings miss you too! They kick all the time when I say your name!" She told me.
I smile at the fact and look at Kirstie, who nodded.
"Come back home soon okay? Please? Mommy and I miss you. Sometimes I hear Mommy cry at night or not listen to me sometimes." She told me.
"Come back please Daddy?" She asked sadly, sending me on the verge of tears.
"Scarlett have you seen my phone?" Kirstie's voice was heard faintly.
Scarlett flushed and stood up immediately. "Bye Daddy. Love you." She whispered before the video ends.
I wipe the tear from my eye. Only now did I realize that I really missed my daughter. I loved her so much and couldn't live without her now that she's entered my life.
I suddenly feel a hand hold mine and squeeze it. I look up to see Kirstie teary eyed as well.
"As much as I hate to say this, but we need you back. I need you back again. I can't handle not seeing you every day and seeing you with our beautiful daughter. Please come home?" She whimpered, holding my hand tightly and rubbing her thumb on my knuckles.
And I answered yes.
