"I..." she starts, her voice barely a whisper, "I think we should..."
But before she can finish, the doorbell rings, startling us both back to reality. We pull away, slightly flushed and flustered, exchanging an awkward glance that speaks volumes.
"Rosé must be here," she says, breaking the spell with a nervous laugh. "Let's, uh, let's go see what she wants."
Relieved for the interruption, I nod, grateful for the reprieve. We compose ourselves and head downstairs, leaving behind the charged moment that hung in the air like an unfinished melody.
"Hey, Rosé," she greets as she opens the door, her tone cheerful but betraying a hint of unease. Rosé enters, oblivious to the tension, her presence bringing a sense of normalcy to the room. "We really need your help, tell us what really happened that night." I plea to her.
I take a moment to gauge Rosé's reaction, knowing this isn't easy for her. Her response is measured but tense, reflecting the weight of the situation.
"I told you what happened," Rosé says firmly, her voice tinged with a hint of defensiveness.
Lisa interjects calmly but firmly, "That wasn't everything that happened."
Rosé sighs softly, her shoulders tensing slightly before she continues with a resigned tone, "I was sketching when I saw them." Her voice carries a mix of reminiscence and reluctance. "It was at night. There are moonflowers that climb up the gates of the chapel, and I wanted to draw them while they were in bloom."
She pauses briefly, as if organizing her thoughts, then continues, "So after dinner, I walked over to the chapel with my sketchbook and pencils. On my way, I saw Brandon Park, my brother, bringing Cassandra Millet to the headmistress's office in Archebald Hall."
"Benjamin had just died from the heart attack, and I figured the headmistress just wanted to check up on her or ask her questions."
"Halfway through my drawing, I heard a noise," she begins, her tone cautious. "I hid behind a tree and waited. At first, I thought it was an animal, but it turned out to be the Board of Monitors."
"There were five of them, each carrying shovels; the only person missing was Brandon Bell. They walked to the chapel and went inside."
Her voice softens with a hint of longing as she confesses, "Normally I wouldn't have followed them, but my dad always talked so much about the Board of Monitors, and I wanted to be one so badly. I thought maybe if I listened in on one of their meetings, I could figure out what it took to get nominated."
Rosé pauses, gathering her thoughts before continuing, "So I followed them. I waited until they had all gone inside, then took off my shoes and snuck in before the doors closed."
"They were almost out of sight when I made it to the pews, and I just barely saw Ingrid Fromme, another junior Monitor, crawl through the hole behind a grate near the pulpit."
"Wait," I say. "They all climbed into a hole in the back of the church?"
"Yeah," Rosé affirmed with a solemn nod to my question. "I didn't want to go in it at first, but then I figured if the Board of Monitors was using it, it must be okay. So, I followed them. The opening was about two feet wide and tall, and it had a little stepladder going down."
"It was dark and dusty, and I couldn't see anything. After only a few feet, I hit the ground, and it was sort of like a tunnel or a passageway or something."
Her voice wavered slightly as she continued, clearly reliving the eerie journey through the underground passage. "I didn't bring my candle, so I just ran my hands along the wall and walked toward their voices. I walked forever. They took a bunch of turns until I had no idea which direction they were headed."
